OK, I'll bite. I have one entry that I personally thought would have done better than 46th place. But I was "new" to DPC back then...
Challenge: Country Life
Details: Take your best shot at depicting life in the country.
When I found this subject to photograph, I thought it screamed "life in the country"... |

I thought I would have done better with this

I certainly thought it was a good representation of summer, but people don't seem to like photojournalistic style shots it seems. I scored 5.9 but I was hoping for over 6. This was a candid and the answer to so many peoples question about the blue at the top is that it is a boat tarpaulin providing shelter |

Those are good examples of picture that should've done better. Here's my own "...would'a, could'a, should'a" shot:
It scored well but after all the time and effort I've put into this site I was hoping for my first ribbon.

I always thought I got robbed on my self portrait.. but then I realized it was too creative and artsy for this extremely stock photography oriented site... too bad I put any thought into making a photo that didn't look like all the others! Maybe it didn't deserve a ribbon but definitely higher then in the 100's

Cool shot K-Rob! The thing is about this site is popular appeal wins the day, artistic license rarely pays off from what I can see |

YUP! I learned that lesson with that very picture. Oh well...it's a winner in my eyes and one of my favorite pictures from my portfolio.

I still sniffle about this shot occasionally. I think it should have done better, and it still escapes me that towers somehow managed to rate higher.
Ah well.

These look highly pixelated. Is there a higher quality setting on your camera? |

When my camera has a grand total of 0.3 megapixels? Nope.
I know my equipment is lacking, and I can even see myself that Towers is not a great shot, but I really did have high hopes for Unicorn and Foal...

Certainly it was never destine for 'ribbonhood', but I've always thought that Guest of Honor got the short end of the stick... I know a lot of folks don't like anything to do with kids and a lot more don't like any portion of a photo anything less then Crystal clear sharp focus, but everything in that shot was intended and I felt it worked...
Actually, when I look at the challenge where I won a ribbon, I find shots I felt were much better than mine :)

K-rob-- that is a really great shot. It is artistic and IMO technically well done. I really like the smallness of the people compared to the vastness of the natural world around it. Sorry it did n't do better. |

From a critical vs. the popular point of view images a) to c) are underrated, IMO. Image d) however is overrated, the way I see it. That d) actually was considered a better photograph than a) was particularly interesting, since I had submitted it (d) for the sole purpose of testing the field. By my standards, it is an average shot, not without some interest, but 'artless'.

Thanks for the kind words ellamy. I was a little disapointed but I'm sort of over it now. =)

Hey, at the risk of being banned or divorced I agree.
A pretty woman in the shower? Now how can that not take a ribbon in . . .ummm . . . Seasonal Shots? Or Past? Or Future? Or . . . .

Wow. I just did a quick profile search and I was amazed by the average scores of some of the more invovled photogs here. Most of the well-knowns (at least to me) average between 5.0 and 5.9x. Shiiizzzam has an average score barely over 6 and many, MANY others fall below the 6.0 line. Hmmm. That's at least moderatly encouraging to someone who regularly finishes at the middle of the pack or farther back. Not too many points separate us on average.
I'm sure that several factors are overlooked like the fact that in any one competition the highest rated photos can tend towards the 8.0 mark or something but overall, I just found something to get excited about with my average scores. Now if I can just keep that score up over the next 30 or so challenges.
