There are at least three shots still in the Past challenge that have suspiciously unusual aspect ratios, and I don't believe they're all done in camera. I hope it's a slowdown of the validation process, but I'd at least like to see some explanations.

I didn't even think of looking for that. May have to take another look just for kicks. I've never had a response to any DQ request I've made, ever, although I've only made about 5 or 6. |

Good point Ed, I never thought about looking at ratio sizes while voting either. But looking back there are some strange looking photo sizes in some of the shots in the challenge.

Are you saying cropping is disallowed?

For the The Past challenge all editing was disallowed, other than resize. |

I bet some people got confused and thought resizing was the same as cropping.

It is effectivly, unless is was stated that proportions had to remain the same?

then again ... i do know that some of the cameras do not shoot at the typical 640 x 480 ratio or 1600 x 1200... some shoot a little more square like at 1500 x 1200 ... something to also take into consideration ... my dad's HP shot at a weird ratio ... |

I had thought that rotating had been deemed a no-no for this one, yet many are obviously rotated, including the winner. I could be wrong -- certainly wouldn't be the first time :) |

While I'm in anal-retentive mode, I was also very curious about this one in the Seasons Challenge:
//www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=33671
Many of us questioned whether or not it could have been snowing in Holland this time of year, but I don't know whether an official DQ was offered. Out of curiosity, I checked the current weather forecast for that particular town, and it seems to be mild, but certainly not snowy there (highs in the mid-60s F).
Just curious!

AFTER the challenge started, Langdon said rotating was ok.

There are 1.62:1 and 1.16:1 and other weird ratios, they must be cropped!
Cameras usualy give 1.33:1 or 1.5:1 ...

Maybe they only DQ winners?
The only DQ I have requested was for a seasonal shot that was a direct copy of another photographers work. I thought it would be removed from the site to avoid problems with copyright infringement. |

We don't ONLY DQ winners. And we don't DQ automatically. Sometimes proof is requested in order to make a judgement. There are a few waiting however that I believe will be DQed when proof comes in, but we have to wait for that.
Nasbaum, if you can send me a copy of that photo you're talking about, or if you can find it online somewhere, it could help. So often people try to recreate something, that if we DQed it without proof, we would look really stupid if it turned out they were simply recreating a photo they had seen in a magazine.
Alan, some cameras do in camera rotation as well. So in that case this would then be considered legal (even if Lang hadn't stated all rotation was legal), as I saw at least one image with it written in the comments that they had done it in camera.
With all that said, I do feel that the DQ's are backed up a bit, and I tried to get an explaination on what's going on, to no avail. |

As far as I know the only ratios digital cameras create are 4:3 or 3:2 (same as you stated). If someone else has a camera that does differently, please tell us.
The questionable submission where people didn't reply to our proof requests will be removed shortly.

I has one of the guys fighting to know if rotation was allowed. I got so carried away with getting that info, that I lost track of time and the date and did not get my picture in on time.
Too bad, cause it was a winner. LOL!
