Well, it's now semi-official. The pictures are hot-linked from one of Nikon's web site:

So, barring Nikon purposefully dissiminating fake pictures of the new camera, this is the new camera to be released in August.

Lookin good. That large screen will rock and I assume the viewfinder is larger as well?

Can't go wrong with it, I'm sure.

Obviously, this camera uses SD cards, not CF. It has a new (function?) button on the front of the camera. The viewfinder dioptre adjustment is the same as on D200. I'm really hoping they improved on the viewfinder - that's the biggest problem with the current D50 and D70 - hard to focus manually. From the looks of it, the LCD seems to be bigger, too.

Yeah the SD card change is the only thing that bugs me. But I still want one ...

Really looks like an updated version of the D70. I wonder if they are using the same frame.

oh look. They 'accidently' leaked the photos.... Again.... :)

I don't understand Nikon's new obsession with SD cards. why change memory format mid stream?

Maybe they see SD as being the future

For people moving up from compacts and prosumers the SD slot is attractive and for the bigger spenders the cost of buying a few SD cards is not an issue when you can get 1gb cards for £10.99 (link).

Also there are now quite a few SD->CF adapters around

I dunno a lot about the techie stuff but SD has some kinda advantage in it's IO that means it can do stuff that CF can't so that you end up with products like this: //www.eye.fi/

Personally, I like CF but I do use SD as well (with an apapter) in my D200

I'll tell you exactly what's driving the change to SD... Money. The CF format requires a very expensive connector and the larger card plus the connector eats up a ton of valuable real estate on the circuit boards, as well as valuable volume inside the body. The manufacturer can specify a surface-mount connector, which in this pin count and density will represent some assembly challenges and is not as reliable as the alternative (through-hole mounted). The second option implies that the backside area on the board is also sacrificed for the connector, and it potnetially implies a secondary soldering operation. The pin-in-socket style connector is also prone to bent pins, whereas the SD connector won't have this issue. So in summation, from a cost-of-assembly standpoint, SD has a big advantage.
On the consumer side, CF cards are still the fastest, highest-capacity cards on the market, and often the least expensive. The larger card almost never a concern for the end user. As a matter of fact, a very small, thin card can be more easily lost or bent/damaged, and that is a small concern with SD. The continued popularity of the CF card spec for devices that are not space and cost limited is a testament to the robustness of the format.

One more reason: it's easier to keep the SD cards farther from the imaging sensor. This means less heat transmitted from the card to the sensor, so less noise.

It's harder to damage pins on SD that CF. SD and it's hardware takes up less space in the body of the camera, freeing up a little space.

my brother inlaw lived in japan for the past 3 years as a jet. he said this camera is probably already in the stores in tokyo. he is going to email a friend that still lives there and see if he will go have a look. This guy owns a D-70s which he picked up 3 months before it became available anywhere else. so he is not a stranger around nikon's and should be able to give me a good review via email. providing he doesn't mess up the translation , if the camera is released in Japan first, It usually only has japanese menu's.

up until they announced this camera i was all set to purchase a d-200 I got the clearence from my wife to buy it but perhaps i can get this one and use the extra money for a new lens or some other must have accessory .... my wife wants my d-50 which is why she is letting me get a new camera. I think she is even having thoughts about joining DPC,,,

Anybody fancy taking a guess at how much the D80 will probably sell for?
07/26/2006 01:30:10 PM · #19
$1199.99 USD that will be the market entry price, should drop to $999.99 USD after Xmas thats my guess.

Anyone think this might have an effect on the price of the D200?
07/26/2006 01:38:51 PM · #21
i was just thinking about that right now. I hope they are not releasing this model to avoid having to lower the price of the D-200. I was sort of wishing that it would come down a 2-300 bucks so I can afford to buy some extra cards if i get one.

I really hope it has wifi capability like the D200.
