Just got asked this question yesterday and well, frankly I couldn´t give an answer. I don´t know why but I just know I really really like it. I just have to go out in the middle of the night to take photos or drive a couple hundred miles to get that particular shot or whatever it takes...

I went through a period in september-october where I didn´t take any photos for myself, just a couple of assignments and I got really depressed, decided that I´d rather forego sleep than skip taking photos for myself so I guess it´s more of a "need" to take pictures than just doing it for fun.

What about you guys, why do you like it?

Because no matter how rotten everything else is going, I always *ALWAYS* feel excitement and joy when I snap that card into the reader and look at what I shot for the first time...

that is a tough question indeed.

For me, it still is to be able to capture a photo the way I had it in mind. I'm pretty conceptual, I think of an image for days before I execute the idea.

Photographing also brings some sort of calmness to me, I've never had a hobby in which I could spent more than 2 hours for just one result.

I just love it :)

Simply because I can use my creativity in which every way I like through my work....and instead of feeling like I am being watched...I feel like the I am hidden behind the camera. That gives me a sense of confidence to show my creativity even more.

Basically...I can be me!

I also go through stages where I do nothing but clients photography...and it sucks. Another photographer in town went for a few years of doing nothing but clients work. He admitted to now hating photography as he only saw it as work. So I started taking him out on a weekly basis...with no venue or object in mind. At first he hated me turning my camera onto him...but now...we are used to each other photographing each other out in the field...and we have discovered some wonderful places and new techniques in the process.

Trust me folks...get out there and let your hair down...you never know what you will find.

I'm addicted to looking. Perhaps even to seeing--or trying to see. It is for me about capturing more than nounting the kill on the wall...were I a hunter I'd be shooting rubber bullets to watch the prey fall and then I'd get up close to examine it, pull its hair, inspect its teeth, rub my fingers in the tufts of its ears. I'd stand back to see what it would do, watch it strugglet to find its feet and be happy when it limped away.

I enjoy holding. My photo files are my pet cages. They are all the birds I've taken in from the wild. They hold the flowers I've plucked, the shells in my pockets, the mountains I've brushed up against, the paths I've walked...They are my maps, my boxes, my books.

I enjoy being clever, solving puzzles, posing problems, sharing humor, wanting people to see things the way I see them, having people respond to something the way I respond to it...I like to poke at the world to see what it's made of.

I love photography, because there is unlimited variation in subject out there to keep me interested.

I also feel that you are always only as good as your last photo. That keeps me on my toes, always wanting to better myself.

It blends being creative with resouceful with visual. I love it!!!!

Power, control, blackmail...uh... I mean....

The main reason I like photography is that my pitures are generally better than my memory (hopefully). I like capturing moments in time. Often times it's too easy to forget how amazing something can be in just a fraction of a second.

I guess a big part of it is me being a perfectionist and I always like learning more and I realize that I maybe know about... what... 5% of the whole world of photography if I am lucky so it gives me endless abilites to grow as a photographer, that may have something to do with it.

yep learning is probably the most important thing I need in a job or life. Without learning and progressing it feels pointless and meaningless.

I think you'll find many "perfectionists" in this field...we are the dissatisfied. One needs to ask, however, what is it I am "pefecting"? If it is expression, great! If it is technique, well...not so bad an aim. If it is acceptance...and so on until you become as dissatisfied with pat answers as you are with your work.

I like photography because it allows me to bring this beautiful world and the people in it to the eyes of thousands across the world.

Through my photographs, I can potentially inspire, give joy or make a person think something new and profound. That is a powerful and wonderful thing to be able to do.

On a selfish note, it motivates me to try new things, go new places and meet new people.

On a a super selfish note, I love the way my portfolio looks and can truly see where I have been and where I hope to go by viewing it myself.

It's a good way to live here and now, and appreciate being alive. We notice things that most of the population rushes by. We are visual poets, in a way.

I like it because almost everybody has a camera, but very few know how to make something spectacular with it. I am trying to be part of the few.

This is how I also feel although I am in the opposite position of that guy you mentioned. I only shoot for myself and feel if I did start shooting for clients I will start to hate it. Any cure for that? :P

PHOTOGRAPHY is my escape from my personal health problems, into a world of beauty, where one can see through the lens, all the things that make this world a better place.
It is also a world of real life issues, fantasy, escapeism, fun, laughter, sadness, joy, tears, and most of all, its a place where all the people that come into your life, love the same thing, yes, photography.
Thank you .....

I know what you are saying...I used to draw too...even had people wanting to buy my drawings....and then I discovered the computer...! I remember a few years ago I entered three of my computer drawings into the art section of the show. I put them into computer art and the stupid steward decided to put one of them in the standard art section. It went up against framed paintings...and came second...I laughed until my sides were sore.

So combine that with photography and you have such a wonderful area to play within...life is so good!
