What is the major advantages/disadvantages with the 2X and 1.4X Canon extenders? Anyone use either or both? I have heard that the 2X is quite a bit softer than the 1.4. I will be using the 70-200 f4L primarily with it (until I can step up in L class glass).
Thanks

with 1.4 you will probably still have auto-focus. With the 2.0 and the f/4 lense you will have to manually focus. I use a 2.9 manual focus and pretty happy, still sharp |

Yes, manual focus only with the 2.0x, unless you use a 1-series camera or tape pins. The 2.0x with the 70-200 f/2.8 IS is soft wide open (f/5.6) but recovers pretty much full sharpness when stopped down 2 stops (f/11). Not altogether very useful, IMO.
With the f/4 version of the lens, the 1.4x is a much better choice, IMO. |
