It had to be fairly cryptic, but I squeezed the above information into the title, just in case. Apart from one amusing response in Swedish, all comments explained that it was not an anachronism. I can only assume that American voters still buy into the idea of dying for ones country. One feels just a little ill.

Raish: I guess I won't bother permanently recording my comment on your anachronism shot, because your comments here seem to indicate they wouldn't be welcome. So I'll just post them here.
First, I think your assumption is incorrect. Most people, including me, don't speak whatever language the sign is in (Swedish?), so wouldn't know what it meant. I'm sure that applies to most people at DPC, regardless of country, not just Americans. DNMC comments, therefore, probably weren't from people who understood you were talking about the idea of dying for your country. Instead, I'd bet they saw what I saw: a sign remembering a couple of people for some reason.
Maybe it's a language problem. Perhaps when you put the term "commemorate" in your title, you intended to clear up the meaning? However, that term can mean any form of remembrance for any reason, not just to note people who died for their country.
Now, even if it had been clear, you probably would still have gotten plenty of DNMC comments. But at least you then would have been making a subtle point people just disagreed with. Unfortunately, I think your point was simply missed because of language.
Now, as to the question of whether dying for your country is anachronistic, I guess you and I are just different. I think that sacrifice of any kind for a worthy cause is, indeed, appropriate and worth remembering. Not just dying, and not just for your country, but yes, including that ultimate act.
I don't mean that all death is a good thing, but there are definitely times when risking that is appropriate. WWII, for example.

Thanks, Jeff.
I guess the context might have helped. These guys hardly had a choice - Norway was occupied. I would have thought the language in 'falt for sitt land' would be transparent enough, but what doesn't show, maybe, is that this isn't so much a public monument as a plaque set up at the place where they worked, for the benefit of their comrades. Nobody works there any more and hardly anybody goes there either. The impression that I have when I look at it is of two brave, hard, decent and honourable men. It's stretching a point, but I can't help thinking of these as qualities from another time.
A boy dressed up in theatrical costume is not an anachronism. It's bang up to date. I'm not in a very good mood here, sorry. It's not like the picture's prize winning material or anything. |

That's the problem - it really, really isn't. People have trouble here sometimes with English, much less Norwegian or Swedish. Even Americans have trouble sometimes with English. ;)
And trust me, I won't argue with you about some of the other entries!

A lot of what I now do in terms of editing came about because of things like that, where people made suggestions on my shots in a thread.

I thought I'd try this even though I rarely get much in way of responses. Again, this is why I try to stick to TS members when looking for feedback. It's been two hours, I've had plenty of views, yet not one single response. Is is me? Do I stink as well as suck? Sigh... |

Give it time and bump it this evening.
You might also send a note to Brad - he's a PS wizard and very friendly.
Now that I know you'd like some ideas, I'll play with it tonight, too. :)
One more thing - you might try another forum thread title if this one doesn't work out - not everyone will know what "pimp my gators" means.
I find short, direct things like "how could I improve this" yields a decent number of responses. And in your first post, as you did on the current thread, specifically invite people to process your photo.

Heh. Especially since one person already complimented the thread title in her post. :)

Kelli, I didn't get to your shot tonight. Sorry.
I was busy shooting my night shot entry, and oh, boy, am I excited about this one. :) I'm as excited about this as I was about my color portrait entry.

I have a whole bunch of shots from which to choose for Bicycles. None will be "a hit" with the DPC crowd, so I figure I'll probably enter the one least likely to succeed, mostly because it's the one I like best. It may be good for a Posthumous comment, though!
Good luck with the night shot, Jeff - I'm sure it will do well - you're good at those! |

Thanks. This is a different kind of shot. Well, the result is a typical shot for me, but the subjects and manner of taking it are quite different. Regardless, I have no doubt that northern lights will take 3 of the top 5 slots and 5 of the top 10. And 4 of those will be in Iceland.
Good luck in bikes! You're good at those. :)

Could have used you yesterday - there are bunch of ducklings/goslings at the park I tried to shoot, but the silly pigeons were always trying to hog the limelight (and the food everyone kept trying to give the ducklings). I shall find a shot or two to post later on.
And Kelly, you can complain all you want about scores here - perfectly allowable! :-) |

Might I have a momentary brag ?
This photo :
It just garnered me a new personal best, and one that I'm positive will stand for quite a while. Also a top-10 finish (but it was a very small number of entries).
It was an expert-editing challenge, and I'm kind of laughing about my score, as there really is nothing "expert" about the editing, unless cloning out the shirt-sleeve counts.
But it was kind of fun to put together. The original vase is actually behind Teddy, holding him up - using the belt to tie him to the vase.
The vase on the "table" is the cap off a bottle of hair detangler.
The flowers are toothpicks and some fabric flowers that I bought years ago at a fabric store.
The table is the box from my 50-mm lens covered in a white wash cloth.
The hand belongs to my hubby,

Originally posted by metatate: Personally, I like the OOBIE / YAPPIE award nomination technique for people who think differently or are particularly helpful in critiques. This would reward people that make the site better - not just by getting ribbons but by conributing in a positve way.
This could be incorporated into free memberships somehow but I'm not sure it's going to be done from the top. One scenerio if it was incorporated into the site: There could be an automated nomination system I suppose, which would allow each member to nominate maybe 3 people each month for an award that would result in a benefit of extended or free membership for a period of time.
Another scenerio one that I think would work would be that reputable groups such as Team Suck would be given two free memberships that they could give away along with the YAPPIE / OOBIE ewach month. THe same think could happen for the WPL MVP and other groups that maintain a positive relationship with DPC and generally make the site better.

On another note... is our OOBIE/Yappie going to work without Mary? And is this all going to get swept up under the rug? Other than us, does anyone else even have a clue what happened? |

Yeehaw, so Chains should hit the 5s and stay there, I see no reason why not. Jeffrey, tried your lamb shanks recipe, VERY yummy! (Mind I only cooked 3 shanks, in a skillet as big as yours - how can you get 6 done is beyond me!)
OK gotta go catch up on the thread and do some voting!

Congratulations - I impressed. |

Huh? Without Mary?!?
What happened?
Edited: I found that long metatate quote:

But I'm still wandering in a daze about whatever you're saying happened to Mary.

WHOAH. NOOOOOOOOOO. NO. NO.
NO.
Clear enough? :)
*picks his jaw up off the floor*
I'm just responsible for notifying the winners after Mary posts them to the relevant threads.
Kelli, is that what you meant?
Anyway, here's Posthumous' post again for reference (I've bolded the sole responsibility of OYNC):
