It is essentially straight from the camera, except for resizing and sharpening. I really like these challenges. They truly make you pay attention to your framing of a shot, and all the other pesky details you kinda figure you might be able to fix later with editing. They're a good exercise! |
I don't mind straight from camera shots. I think it's really cool because like you said melethia, it makes you have to pay attention more to what you're doing. The only thing that will hurt me is my dirty sensor because I can't clone that out.
noraneko, I tried using the blower that you were talking about before but even that doesn't work. Tonight I'm going to buy a sensor cleaning kit at Saginaw Photo Supply. I think I'm actually going to have to get "down and dirty" on cleaning that rascal.
Wish me luck because I will need it. |

Bob, I have to clean mine too, and I discovered that after shooting today. Bummer! I use the Copper Hill method (I think that's the name of the company that sells the stuff). It has a cleaning fluid, a little spatula thingie, and sterile cotton pads you wrap around the spatula thingie. You set the camera to cleaning mode and put a drop of the fluid on the pad after you've wrapped it tightly on the swab/spatula thingie, then swipe across the sensor. I've done it several times on the Rebel and once on the 30D. I do it in a closed room with no blowers on (house fans). And you do it very carefully!
IMPORTANT - whenever you're going to do anything that reveals the sensor (ie keeps the mirror open) BE SURE YOU HAVE A FULLY CHARGED BATTERY.
I should do mine tonight, since once of the shots I took today has two very prominent sensor dust spots! |

Deb, thats my problem. I took some shots yesterday that I would like to use in Free Study but the sensor dust is soooooo bad that they're almost ruined.
Once I clean the sensor, I'm going back.
How long does the cleaning usually last when you do this? |

I've only done the 30D once I think and I've been using it for, gosh... since the Flower challenge, whenever that was. That was the first one I shot with it. So it'll last awhile depending on the conditions you subject your camera to. I'm always try to change lens very quickly and carefully, and out of the wind if at all possible to prevent getting any dust in during lens changes (which of course, you can't really prevent). And though I don't always do it - I think I should turn off the camera before I change lenses. Seems to me there should be less static charge on the sensor when the camera is turned off but I don't know that for sure. |

I am REALLY excited about the tree challenge. This is right up my alley! And I have the ultimate tree to shoot....now if I can just get a decent photo of it. Open shade filter time. |

This is how it works for me. I took shots of trees yesterday!!!
I took a shot of a single tree last summer for the Rule of Thirds challenge, the next day, Single Tree Challenge came out and the tree was too far away to go back. |

Heh. My "Where You Live" shots for the past two days have featured trees. I might go reshoot one of 'em for the challenge. Depends on how good I can get them to look straight from the camera.

Doesn't anyone wanna discuss what IS and what is NOT "Street Photography" any more? ROFL! ... Man ... there must be at least half as many ideas about what is and what isn't as there are voters ... LOL
P.S. I think Sesame Street character portraits should be permitted.

Yippee! :) I'm entry #10 in Trees.
Still trying to get a decent Street shot. I've tried the past two days, but I can't spend more than 10 minutes without my hands turning to ice.

Well, people....unless things shape up a lot over the weekend, I may be done here.
I haven't been able to upload anything for three days and I simply do not have it in me to go through fifteen tiers of customer support back and forth with the phone company and my ISP only to have it shake down that they just don't give a shit about the two dozen homes up here on the mountain.
It's making me nuts and I just can't take it any more.
I'm sick of wasting hours and getting no results.
What a bunch of shit the term customer support is......and has been for a number of years.
If you don't have a typical problem that can be resolved with no effort on the part of the company, too bad about your f*ckin' luck.
I'll check back, and I should probably give it some time because of the storm and all, but I've hated this dialup since I moved here 18 months ago.

Nope, no leaving Team Suck, Jeb. You are far too entertaining. Oh, and your photos aren't half bad, either ;-)

for 3 days!:)
dear Jeb, I haven't been participating in challenges for almost 2 months, well, there were some weird very low scored photos of course.
I'm getting sick even if I have to wait some minutes and getting no results so I do understand you!
and I agree with Catherine: your photos aren't half bad either ;)

Besides, Jeb ... if you go away, then you won't be able to view my WAY out of the box shots for at least one of the current challenges ;)

Oh happy day!
Finally sold some pix to Fotolia!!!! Just two but better than nothing, eh? So, in keeping with my promise to post the infamous brownie recipe once I got into a stock house...here it is!
Snaffles' Mum's Brownie Recipe
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup flour
1/2 cup cocoa
2 eggs
1/2 cup margarine or softened butter
1 tsp vanilla
3 tbsps water
OPTIONAL 1/2 cup chopped nuts
Sift sugar, flour and cocoa into a bowl. Add all other ingredents and beat well for at least two minutes. (Fold in any extra stuff like nuts at this point, after beating). Pour batter into a greased 8-inch pan and bake at 325 (medium-low setting) for 30 minutes. Let cool, cut and EAT! Recipe can be doubled.
And yay my F&V shot inching up to around 5.307!!!! Ironically it was this, and my Entrance pic, of the four that I submitted to Fotolia that didn't get accepted. I guess you can see the pix by going to Fotolia and searching for me as snaffles. |

Thanks Svetlana - I can't believe they didn't accept you, of all people! The pix they bought were one of a small model red car, shot in a lightbox, and I smudged out the shadows that were obfuscating the outline of the car. The second was one of a toy horse, also with all shadows and b/g removed, on a plain blue surface.
Maybe Kelli will post the link to her Fotolia page so you can get an idea of what they like. She's sold many more pix to them than I have.
Good luck! |
