Somehow I missed a whole page of this thread. I so hate when that happens! Anyway, congrats on the new PBs to Jeanne and David - and you're welcome, David - really a fine shot, by the way, and it looks very nice on your top row!

Bob, I plan to play with the various perspective tools to see what I can figure on 'em. I'll give a shout to either you or Svetlana if I get stuck!

Just got back from the big parade in Mainz and I'm typing very slowly because my fingers haven't quite thawed out yet. It was a 400+ ISO kinda day and I couldn't see a darn thing of the parade! That's what I get for being short. I saw some resourceful individuals who brought their own stepladders. What a great idea that was! At any rate, I'll post some pictures if any came out - I generally just held the camera as high as I could over my head (which brings the camera to what an average height person would shoot at) and clicked. It's kinda fun, though, since you never know what you got!

Thank you for the note Deb. Sorry you're so cold, hurry and warm up. I know my Canon isn't the greatest, but I love the flip out so that I can hold it way over my head and still somewhat see what it sees. LOL. That's not to say that it does me any good!
I'll be away and won't hear any of the rumblings on DPC for a few days. Catch up on Thursday or Friday.

Hmmm.... methinks a 7 isn't a very sucky score... (Nice!)

I have 2 comments so far. One hates the title, and frankly, so do I. I do like the picture, though, and really shouldn't have tried to be cute with title.

best first day score ever for me
02/19/2007 10:26:04 AM · #706
Hi everyone, Thanks for all the nice comments and ever-useful remarks on F&V - I thought it might be slightly OOF but wasn't sure, the backlighting threw me a little.

Got a pic in for Hate. Much to my dismay when I was editing it I noticed some noise on the right. I shot from a distance of 3-4 feet, f8.0, ISO 80 and aperture 0'4. I always thought noise was a problem related mostly to higher ISOs.

Any hints/ suggestions? scalvert suggested I get Noise Ninja...wonder if it's shareware...

Congratulations ... personal bests are always a reason for celebration.

Just do NOT forget that voting here in DPC is not a total and definitive judgement as to the value or beauty of the image you put forth.

So when you get LOW scores ... don't stomp on yourself TOO much if you love the image you produced.

I imagine images here could get scored below 5 here for a particular challenge and get sold for 4 figures no problem.

This is a thread in the suck forum about noise with examples. The two main noise reduction packages used are neat image and noise ninja. Noise can be noticeable in low light situations regardless of ISO.

Very true! There's always another challenge around the corner. I do credit the dpc voters, trolls and all, with helping me grow a tough photographic hide. I just try to learn and carry on.

Thanks for the link! Oh well guess my Cheerios are gonna get peed in by the trolls for the noise and possibly lack of contrast - but if I upped the contrast the noise would be more apparent. Lesser of two evils. So I better get noise ninja pronto!

BTW does anyone find that 'Despeckle' in PS doesn't seem to work? It didn't appear to make a whit of difference.

Yay, Darren! That is an outstanding score. Maybe a new PB for you, or even a (dare I say it) ribbon?

Way to go, Darren. With 56 votes already, you stand a good chance of finishing with a high score. I see you got a red ribbon for another street shot. This must be your forte.

Susan, a few questions come to mind:
1) How long was the exposure? Long exposures will also produce noise. On my camera, though, I've found that a properly exposed pic will have more noise with high ISO/short shutter vs. low ISO/long shutter. So I always try for the lowest possible ISO.

Oh - did you mean "exposure 0.4s" as opposed to "aperture 0'4."?

Hmm. 0.4s at IS0 shouldn't produce much noise.

2) Did you notice then noise in the original or after you edited? When you enhance contrast, you can make subtle tone variations pop out much more and look like noise. A classic case is in pics of the sky, where there might be a mix of several colors of pixels in a small area. The variations are invisible in the original, but if you drive the contrast too high ...

I think it's called "combing" because if you look at the histogram (e.g., in a levels layer), it looks like a comb, with many spikes, instead of a smooth curve.

The only solutions I've found are to back off the contrast a bit or as a last step, flatten the image and blur the noisy bits. You have to flatten first so the contrast enhancement actually affects the pixels, as opposed to simply being applied to blurred pixels.

This SUCKS, because I really like this shot. It's climbing slightly from a very bad beginning, but I'll be lucky if this even makes it to 5 now.

I have just entered Tree with something that I expect will get a lot of DNMC comments. But here again, I like it a lot, so I'm going with it.

I actually have an idea for "Acronym". Now I just have to get my camera back from having the sensor cleaned.

cheers for the comments guys, I like Street photography and have been waiting for this challenge for a while now. I am really hoping now for a top 10 finish

Hey Darren, when you get really, really good, like even better than you are now, will you still hang with us? :-) Good luck on the top ten!

I peeked at my score in Street - it's a good one, so I turned it back off so I don't have to watch it slowly wander back down. It's one that won't make top ten, but I'm hoping for top 30. I'm itchin' to post outtakes, too.

Now why didn't I think of that. I can just take a picture of the sky at F22 and voila!

Sorry to hear Julie... I finished voting, the one thing I noticed about this challenge was that there were a lot of homeless type shots and a TON of shots of people's backs. Neither which I care for. Especially the backs of people, it's not a good idea 90% of the time.

I think people have there own ideas what Street Photography should be and should not be. I lean towards the "Henri Cartier-Bresson" type myself and that affected my scoring. That does not mean the image wasn't a good image though.

Actually, I'm surprised my image is doing better than expected, hovering around a 5.9 at the moment. Kind of strange.

This image is dedicated to Team Suck. I saw this on the way to doing my grocery shopping and had to park and get my camera out. I would NEVER have thought of doing that before I joined Team Suck. C&C welcomed.
