Hi, I just finished working on a picture in Adobe Photoshop 7. When I opened the image in Microsoft Editor, also uploaded at a site, the colours looked very dark. I can't understand what the reason could be. I have been working with Adobe Photoshop for a long time and never had this problem. Thanks.

I find that my photos look darker as soon as I save them and review them in a browser, compared to Photoshop. I thought it had to do with the compressing but maybe Photoshop makes them look brighter. Now I brighten/lighten them before compressing.
What have other people discovered about this? |

Check under Preferences>Color Settings and see if you have a profile specified. If you do, try changing it to sRGB. I think that will make Photoshop display the picture using the same setting that most browsers use. Confirm by opening the with your browser from your disk.
There are some color experts around here who can elaborate substantially, but try this first. |

The Gamma setting should affect all programs though. If the DPC test Grayscale looks good in your browser now, the problem is probably not the Gamma or monitor settings. |

I have found the same problem, only, my pictures look lighter when I download them to the dpc site than they do on Photoshop. |

Is one of you on a Mac and the other a PC? |

I still find the subject of color profiles highly cofusing, but as far as I understand it :
1) the gamma is to set your monitor to display the right range of graytones and colors.
2) in addition to that you can use color profiles to adjust the color display within photoshop to match your printer, so that you see reasonable accurate printing colors on your screen.
I would guess if you save for web, it chooses sRGB color profile, and therefore the preview there should look the same as your internet explorer, but might be different from your normal photoshop view.
Check under Edit, Color settings which profile you are using and then read the help or search on the Internet for more info. This is where my knowledge ends. |

I thought I was having a similar problem with PSP, even though i was working on challenge submissions in sRGB ... then I realised that the image window background in PSP is white, and of course the background here is grey - so it was an optical illusion only. Haven't found a way yet to change the background colour in PSP ...

Ed,
Great point. Even all other things being equal, the background color does have an effect on how you percieve the photo.
For those running photoshop, open a photo and zoom out until the window covers only part of the screen, then press "f"; the phot will display on a gray background. Pressing "f" again displays on a black background, and a third time returns to normal window view.

I have tried changing the gamma settings, also changed the color profile in PS, but it's still not helping. The pictures that I have worked on earlier look similar in PS as well as in other viewers. But now whenever I am adjusting the levels etc. the picture looks fine in PS but much darker and duller in other viewers. Hope someone can help. |

In PSP, you can preview in browser, and set the background colour of the browser to whichever colour you want. The gray used at DPChallenge is one up from white in the standard choice of colours. |
