I think this also deserves some consideration for the PoV II posthumous. Goes Red after bleu's Blue.
rutger's first entry, even.

Distance
Most of the ones I liked finished reasonably high up but of all the shots this was my favourite and I thought deserved a lot more than 75th place

I'd like to nominate this from raish in Ground Up.
I have *NO* idea how he managed to both get the whole machine in the frame and *still* conveuy the sheer size of the thing.
I still don't know exactly what the heck it is, but it's COOL!!!!

It's a pile driver; it's a really large, mechanized version of what you'd do with a fence post and a sledge hammer. The large, vertical component is the piling, and the image is shot from down in the excavation the piling is being sunk into. The machine itself only fills the left part of the image, actually.
That's what I see, anyway :-)

Well, I knew that!!!!!....8>)
I've just never seen one anywhere near that big. It looks from the cab that this thing is about the size of a trackhoe that's usually brought in on a railroad car, then carefully trucked to a construction site. It was the way that he was able to convey the size to me that blew me away.
I can see the track at the side of the excavation, I see how big the rams are compared to the cab, the articulated part of the hammer for positioning is massive......this thing's COOL!!!!

Sorry :-) I should have looked closer at the ID behind the post; I have no doubt YOU "know what it is"... But a lot of people might not, and might think the piling is part of the machine, in which case it would be REALLY big...

Well, by the time I got to page 2 of the results I had found all my ribbon winners for photojournalism. I think that's a first. Maybe you can consider these icing on the cake?
to boyd2000 for
to goodman for
to Skip for
I thought all three of these photos were beautiful on their own, but also fit the challenge perfectly, telling a story, conveying an experience. For once, DPC seems to have agreed with me.

I'm surprised this ended up middle-of-the pack, but what the hell do I know?

duh, it's too dark. I don't even have to go beyond the thumbnail. ;)
on a related note, I'm sorry I skipped this challenge. I'm trying to get all the way through the free study. |
