I found this filter on ebay. I haven't heard of these, and I'm wondering if anyone knows how they can sell an HMC filter that thin for only $15.90 shipped.
It certainly doesn't look like a scam to me.

There's no trick to making a filter slim. But there's no saying how good the quality of that filter is... except that you do get what you pay for. The optical quality will not be the same as a name-brand filter. How good (or bad) it will be is pretty much anyone's guess. How good the coatings are is anyone's guess. I'd certainly stay away. |

If it's easy to make filters thin, then why doesn't everyone do it, and why are thin ones more expensive? I mean, wouldn't less material make it cost less to manufacture? Surely the coatings don't require thicker glass, since I'm imagining they're a few microns thick?
I'm not really asking about this one HMC filter, but in general.

Thanks, kirbic.
I searched Hoya and saw "HMC" and thought it was a Hoya (Hoya Multi Coated being their TM). If I had just looked I would have realized it never even said it was a Hoya!

That's a good point, and I'm not sure how to answer it...
Thanks again for the replies. |

When you pay more for filters, in theory, you are paying for better glass and better coating. Slimness doesn't enter into it, except insofar as for a given manufacturer and the same quality of glass, slim = more expensive to manufacture than regular.
