I just got a Canon 300D, my first DSLR and bought an "Extreme III" CF card and it surprises me how slow the pictures transfer to my computer.
I transferred about 640MB of pictures and it took a little over an hour. This is way slower than the point and shoot I'm replacing, a Canon A610.
Is the 300D not USB 2.0? or is this normal?
Do most people buy CF card readers to fix this problem? Would this fix it? |

I don't think that the 300D is USB2.
A card reader is certainly the quicker option by far and you don't use the camera battery during transfer, either.

most modern PC's have a variety of card readers already built in, if yours doesn't (or is a laptop) you can buy a Sandisk Extreme CF card reader from Amazon for only about $25.
This will transfer everything in minutes. |

| How old is your computer? It might not have a high speed USB port. I have the same problem with my home computer but not with my "newer" work computer. |

| The 300D almost certainly is not USB 2.0; buy a card reader, preferably a FireWire one (if you have FIreWire on your 'pooter) or one marked "USB 2.0 High-Speed" if you don't have FireWire. |

Yeah, a card reader is the way to go, if for nothing else, it saves precious battery power. Make sure, if you find a very good deal on one, that it is not CF-I. Make sure it is CF-II. CF-I will work, but it will be much slower.

One of the best things I have bought is a JOBO external hard drive. It allows me to plug my card in and download the photos on to it, on my way home from the shoot.
Bam! Now I have two coppies of my photos. Two is better than one.
Then I plug the hard drive in my computer, usb 2.0, Seriously it will download about 26gb in an hour. It is the fastest thing I have ever worked with.

| Get yourself a Lexar Firewire CF card reader, you wont be disappointed. |
