I have a few reasons,
1. Lack of Time.

2. Still not photo savy enough (tech specs) where I feel that I will give fair scores.

3. Never comfortable voting in challenges that I have a photo in.

4. Do not want to feel responsible for other peoples rants about other peoples voting habits. Which is the #1 reason I stopped voting.

Now I just do not have the time to vote and I do not think that voting on only 20% is fair to the other 80% so I would have to vote for all or none.

I know there have been threads like that, but I don't see it in the duotones thread. Am I missing something?

(BTW, I finish voting before I look at scored threads so I won't be bothered or influenced by what is said in them.)

Shouldn't we all do our part? The 20% minimum really doesn't take that much time. If you are already a good photographer, it should take almost no time at all to see the qualities/problems with a photo and rate it and if you are struggling to learn to do better, what better way to learn than judging others and then taking a second look at your own photos to see what is lacking.

Should I fail my classes just so people feel better about getting one more vote?

Come on now...I really don't think anyone is asking you to do that are they? Some people spend their spare DPC time voting, some spend it in the forums and with side challenges...your time is your time...use it how you wish. Do whatever makes the site "fun" for you and makes that $25 bucks worth it.

That's my point. The guilt trip isn't really necessary.

I dont vote... cos I dont get enough time for it.
Too many entries and 20% is just too much. I leave comments on the ones that catch my eye.
With the guilt I also havent yet entered any challenge yet too. Because I know I have the time to enter a challenge, but I wont have enough to vote through it. Its weird but I guess I dont take away much, without any guilt.

No time. I try when I can. I usually will vote if topic intrests me.

Since I stopped participating in challenges, I stopped voting (I think there's a few like this).
11/12/2007 11:20:52 AM · #35
I don't vote in challenges I participate in to avoid any possible temptation or perception of others that I would vote to skew the results in my favor. OK, I have placed a couple votes in a couple competitions I've been in, but always caught myself way before 20%, and there is no way to unvote. I have no problem with others voting in challenges they are in.

I also don't vote in Free Studies because my chances of having time to vote 20% is unlikely, thus I was interested in the thread about splitting up FS to 4 challenges.

I'm also less likely to vote if I'm not participating in a challenge or in challenges period.

I vote more when I'm feeling good about my own photography. If I'm in a personal lull, I just get bitter and cranky and its just better for everyone if I don't vote when I'm like that.

I'm in a better mood now, and voted on 3 challenges this week.

No time anymore
11/12/2007 03:16:29 PM · #39
I must be getting old, cos when I get to 100 votes in a big challenge, my eyes begin to droop and I keep head butting the keyboard. Plus, my wife knows when I am voting cos I snore too loudly.

Seriously, I vote 100% on challenges, it is all or nothing. Any less than 100% means you are depriving others of a vote. I don't comment or vote as much as I used to. Commenting lead to PM's querying my comments, so I stopped.

I still vote when I get a chance.

I can understand the sentiment, but to not vote on a challenge because you can't vote 100% also deprives those others of a vote, no?

No, I don't think that you deprive voters if you require less than 100%. Most of the challenges are manageable. The problem lies in the larger challenges that have an unmanageable number of entries. Requiring 100% takes the cherry picking option away from those very selective voters.

You are right, it does! But I refuse to cherry pick or just select 20%, if I don't vote a challenge, everyone is down by my vote, a fairer way in my eyes. I try to vote on a couple of challenges a month if time permits.

Eric, I don't disagree with you, but think you may have misunderstood L2's statement.

Less than 150 entries in a challenge is a challenge I may vote in depending on my mood and desire to wade through a lot of junk.

I will vote on any Nude challenges or variation thereof, guaranteed.

I also won't vote in a challenge if there is any nudity in it. Usually my wife will tell me there are some bad pictures, so I just don't vote in that challenge. I also don't vote in the member only challenges, well because it won't let me since I'm not a member. Otherwise I have voted 100% since I joined last month.

ETA: I misread that I guess, I am the opposite, I won't vote on a challenge with nudity in it guaranteed. Sorry for the confusion.

1. The threads about "how to" vote discourage me

2. Large number of entries in a challenge (>100) I tend to skip the whole challenge, as they all start to kind of meld together.

3. Lake of technical expertise on my part, coupled with item #1, make me feel less than qualified to pass judgement.
11/12/2007 03:44:16 PM · #46
1. The intimidating "mass" of images in some challenges.
2. The triteness and my ensuing disinterest in some challenge topics.
3. The DPC culture which appears to value quantity over quality (I'm thinking of the nature of comments here).

# number of entries
# I don't really care anymore about my own scores within the few challenges I'm still entering
11/13/2007 07:09:28 PM · #48
I only vote for challenges with less than 150 entries, preferably less than 120 (I find voting on more than that just leads to me getting saturated and I hate voting on only some entries), a challenge theme that interests me AND when I have time.

These don't coincide that often any more.
11/13/2007 07:19:33 PM · #49

Lately I haven't voted much because I just don't really care any more. I want to focus on working on my art, not doing stuff for this site so if something I do happens to coincide with a challenge or if a challenge inspires me I will enter and most of the time vote on a challenge I enter in because I want to see what I am up against and since I am looking at the pictures anyhow I might as well vote at the same time

That's completely unfair. Especially for those of us in school right now. I have 6 classes to do work in, I also have to work to make money and I'm in campus groups. I vote when I can. I understand that others might not have time, and that's fine.

If you can vote at work in your free time, great. I can't. Excuse me.
