Since I started this thread, which can be seen as negative, I'll start a positive (hopefully inspiring) flip side.
So, to you regular voters, what drives you?

I vote to learn. I want to see how others visualized the challenge and see the creative mind at work. If I am going to look, then I should vote as well. |

I vote in the challenges I am in. It helps me to see how others interpreted the same topic. Kind of opens my mind to the possibilities...
Smaller challenges are easier to vote on. I can whip thru, categorize the shots (5's, 6's, 7's, etc), then I have time to go back, re-evaluate scores and make comments.
I cannot use this method in large entry challenges. I often do not have time to finish voting. I try to take the time to actually look at the pictures.

I vote because its alot of fun to see where the pictures I voted on actually finished, and to see the other comments on the images I voted on, to see if they agree or disagree with my view and score..

I want to learn and want to "do my duty". I tend to vote more in challenges that I enter to fully understand my placement after rollover. |

I vote (albeit not as frequently as I feel I should), because I think if I expect others to vote on my entry, then the least I can do is take the time to vote on others shots, otherwise it seems a little unfair.

actually voting can be a lot of work, and i'd rather not do it, but when I'm feeling responsible and kind i do it. I'm not a very active challenge participant, entering or voting, but i do about the same percentage of each. |

Npt calling you out, I'm intrigued, but not sure I understand. Can you explain?

I vote simply to look at the photos. I don't really have any interest in how they finish or what the scores are.

It does help to understand why my votes aren't as high as I like when I spent so much time looking at the other entries (during voting)and saw the outstanding talent of others.
If I didn't vote, I would probably not see any of the entries that didn't ribbon. Voting causes me to see alot of art as well as struggling artists, such as my self. It inspires me. |

Main reason: I'm entered in the challenge. I like to vote 100% in the challenge I enter then after its over I see where other images finish around mine, that gives me more satisfaction than the scoring, it gives me a feeling for how I would feel about my image if I was not personally involved
to see what others have created, to learn techniques (ex. bokeh, dof) or processing steps
to see if my picks make the top 10 and to feel like I have some small say in whether the same people win all the time
i like to vote on all images, not just 20%, so a small challenge means I get to vote on them all and comment on as many as possible

When rollover occurs and I see what scored higher (or lower) than my score I have an immediate understanding of why since I've seen the images already. I hate it when I don't have time to vote and then see scores higher than mine. It's not that they don't deserve them but my immediate thought is to figure out what was so good about them, or at least better than mine. I would much rather see something end up on the front page and be happy that a deserving picture won than start comparing it to my entry.
FYI - I always vote in random order and never cherry pick. I have no problems giving high scores to something I like and enjoy giving out high votes. Those high scoring pictures are typically very good and inspire me try harder.
It's good to see you back Leroy.

I enjoy commenting, because I enjoy receiving comments. Even though I don't feel as though I am 'qualified' to give them, I just do because I want to. Never know what twisted idea I may share that ends up being helpful.

When I vote on a challenge i try to vote 100%, if i cannot then i will make sure i vote over the 20% and usually more like 50%, i like to look LOOK at an image before i vote so voting on 500+ shots is very hard for me. if a challenge has around 100 entry then i will do 100% it takes a very long time to study a shot and vote.
edit typo's

I vote because I enjoy the quiet time to look through beautiful photos! It's a great place for ideas too. |

Had posted this in the original thread but have moved to here now that I have seen it.
We have had some answers as to why people don't vote so why don't we put the shoe on the other foot and try to understand why people do vote - maybe the answer lies there also.
As stated in a previous post ... I usually vote on all pictures in a challenge that I am participating in and I am trying to get better with the comments.
Why? Because I figured that was the way it worked. If I want people to vote on my entry, I in return would vote on theirs. I sometimes vote on other challenges that I am not participating in but not very often.
Are some of the shots boring ... well ... yes. But I take comfort in knowing that that person is hopefully going to vote on my entry so that makes things even.
Do I think it's fair for people to put in an entry with no intention of voting? No. If a greater percentage of people were to do that the whole competition side of things will fall apart and that was the thing that drew me to the site in the first place. Forums and side competitions are an added bonus. I suppose that's why I feel that a 20% vote should be compulsory if you enter a challenge because that helps keep the balance.

I always vote all the entries in the challenges I like. I'm not a 20% person... I like it all the way!
Some challenges are not appealing to me, so I don't vote on them.

I've voted in every challenge since I joined. I figure if I want people to vote for my photos then I should do my duty and vote for theirs. But I don't see it as a chore, I enjoy voting. I like seeing all of the photos & I think I vote fairly.
Edited to say I always vote 100% in a challenge as well.

I vote because I want my values to be included in the score, even if just that small amount. I also vote as a source of encouragement to good low-scoring photos (I am often the only 10 a photo gets) and to cause a little doubt in bad high-scoring photos (I am sometimes one of a handful of 4s for a ribbon winner).
I used to vote in every challenge I entered, but I no longer have the time to do that, so I try to pick challenges that will generate interesting photos (like popcorn... NOT). |

I vote whenever I get time and for several reasons. As others have said I want to contribute back hoping others vote for my shot. I want to offer constructive feedback with my honest opinion, good or bad. I want to improve my ability to see, compose and take pictures, and one of the best ways to do so is to evaluate other people's pictures. I like to see how my evaluation and vote compares to other people's, and at the end I go through all of the pictures and compare my votes and comments to others, and the votes that are very different than average I go through and scrutinize to see if I'm not seeing it properly. Not saying everyone on the site should see all pictures the same, but trying to get pointers from others. Also, I enjoy seeing all the pictures and it's just natural to want to feed back on them whether it's just a vote or comment, and maybe that's why I have about a 3:1 ratio comments given:received. |

I vote (80% - 100% of 98% of the challenges) to reward those that have put thought in to their shots, those that have read the challenge description and acted accordingly, those that show in their photographs they are willing to learn and put some effort into processing. And of course (though it doesn't help much), to punish those that shoehorn images into the challenge, those that don't see a proper presentation can make half the photo, those that ignore the challenge descriptions or don't even read them.
In addition, I like to look at photographs and it is the same effort to click on a number as on an arrow. |

This is exactly why I vote. I am going to look at all the photographs anyway, why not vote. I love looking at photographs. The best of the lot get looked at for a longer period of time. |

I vote to cancel out his vote... :) |
