As long as you told the camera "we're shooting in the dark now" by locking exposure on the dark scene, you coud actually have the subject in brighter light - just hold a polarizer or neutral density filter over the lens (once exposure is locked) to keep from overexposing. I hear a sunglass lens works, too. Clunky for sure, but it's available to anyone who wants to make action pans.

I'd end up with a broken ND filter somehow :) I KNEW there was a reason I bought that new camera...

Hey, you managed not to cut off any of your fingers (I hope).

Fingers survived. Only casualty was a few nasty scratches on my polarizer from trying to use it with my P&S digicam...and dropping it several times :-)

When is this? Or are you hypothesizing?

Basically, I'm hypothesizing. I know that Drew/Langdon want to do this... but the extra bandwidth necessary comes at a cost.

Oops, did I just predict a cliche? Didn't mean to, my apologies.

Interesting timing. One of my current assignments is professional bull riding and the arenas tend to be greatly low light places so I have been shooting the wild action -fast advance, wide open shutter, and at 1/30th. About one out of five shots look pretty good. Because of my viewfinder I have been shooting chest high and panning the action without looking at the camera. I have been suprised how well I can stay on the subject. It seems very zen but does work once in awhile.

Everyone who is worried about low-end cameras: I just went out the back and did a quick experiment, and ended up with this fine result :P.

Nicely done, Lisa. Did you shoot through a glass door?

No... I was going to try the sunglasses idea, but somehow it just worked without any kind of filter. It's like black magic sometimes :)

Anyway, it was fun to try :)

I absolutely agree with that - I like this site because it positively encourages people to try things. Yes the theory says that you're not going to get a great panning shot of an F1 car with a Polaroid PDC but that doesn't stop you experimenting and turning out great stuff like this.

I have a quote pinned up at work from one of those quote a day calendars - "Don't let what you cannot do get in the way of what you can" - but then I've got a D1 ;-))

yay! right on, lisae. that's the spirit!

i think people think about things like 'potential limitations' too much, rather than just going out and trying it.

i know for a fact it would be really tough for my camera to take that flying falcon pic submitted by jonniboy in upside down, since i don't have continuous focus tracking, but do you hear me complaining?

;)
