My daughter's coach and a couple of other coaches are interested in having my sister and I taked action photos of games to post with team passwords onto SmugMug. Seems to me consent wouldn't be needed if it is password protected, but since each individual doesn't have a password (just the team), then maybe... Should we play it safe and get some paperwork done or quit worrying and go shoot some pics.

I would get the concent to be on the safe side... anyone that doesn't sign can be left off the smugmug site, and could potentially come to you directly if they want photo's... but I doubt you'd have a really problem getting all if not most to sign a consent

If you are worried about the parents getting upset about the kids having their pictures taken, don't. Public places = less expectation of privacy. So you are ok to take the pictures of the kids playing ball.

The league/park may have issues with you doing this. They may have a contract with another photographer that provides him/her rights. They may also have issue with photographing the "stadium" then selling them.

If it were me in my small home town, I would take the pictures, post them, give coaches/parents access, and sell action shots of the kids to them. Bigger cities, you might want to check with league/park board and get an ok first.

ETA: if you end up with exceptionally good shots that you want to use in advertising or sell elsewhere, contact that individual's parents and get a release signed for that picture.

It's always better to be safe than sorry. I also don't think you would have much of a problem getting them to sign the form.

OK, consent forms it is. I do not have permission from the league, they haven't responded. But the coaches are all for it and it being a small town made up of mostly college kids, I don't think I'll have a problem. Besides, what's the worst that can happen? ...make us stop.

So is there anywhere can I find a generic consent form to go by? I'll just have the coaches send them along with the kids and carry extra around.

I am the photog of our local High School Marching Band.
The Board od Education requested parents to sign a release form for pictures to be taken and published to our website.
I have 2 students who's parents did not sign, so I have to check each and every picture I take (taken at public places) and verify that their face won't show. And if they show, I have to disguise it unrecognizable.

THAT has got to be a serious PITA.
