I just bought a Honda Fit, and I love it more and more everyday. At first I was freaked out about how small it was, but inside it is as big as my Subaru Legacy. I drove it into the mountains today and got 48.2 MPG. It has grown on me so much that I would have to say that it is now my favorite car of all time.

It's quite high, actually. The EPA estimates for the 2008 Fit 5-speed manual are 28 City, 36 Highway, 34 combined. The 2008 Prius is rated at 48 City, 45 Highway, 46 combined (I'm currently averaging 56 MPG in mine). That will vary by driver, but it's also quite possible even for the same driver to vary quite far from that on a single tank in fuel, for reasons including weather, tire pressure, traffic conditions, altitude change over the course of the tank, etc. I've even found that some gas pumps will fill my tank more completely than others. Averages over time tend to be the most meaningful.

Any reason you didn't go with the Escape Hybrid? They offer a pretty significant MPG boost over the gas-only model. Also, 16 MPG seems extremely low for the Escape, even the 4WD V6 (not sure which one you have). Is that typical for you? If so, you may want to adjust your driving and vehicle maintenance habits a bit. I can offer some suggestions if you (or anyone) is interested.
For what it's worth, cost to fill the tank is a fairly meaningless number from a fuel economy discussion stand point. It's totally dependent on the tank size, local price of gasoline, and grade purchased, rather than on the rate at which the vehicle uses fuel.

| remember you are higher up in the mountains so the compression would be different at a higher altitude, maybe that is why it had better mpg |

Congratulations on your new Honda!
I have the same car for almost 4 years now and still love it! On long distance trips (ok, we're in Japan, long distance is not that long...) this car has an extraordinary mileage performance, over 600km per full tank and it only fits about 40l, unless you drive to till the last drop. In the city and everyday life it is not that economic, but so practical, spacious, all in all a perfect little car!

I have no idea from the technical standpoint, but I do know my '72 Datsun, when it was 8 yrs old, would do 55mpg over the Rockies. |

I just put $60 in my Malibu, last time I filled it it was $45, and yesterday gas went up yet another 3c per liter. |

Yikes...I drive a 2002 Ford Escape, not a hybrid, with 100,000 miles on it and get about 22 mpg city, 25 mpg hwy. 16 seems extremely low. Even that doesn't seem too good at the current prices. Our next vehicle will be in the 30's for mpg for sure.

That works out to 35 MPG... makes more sense (still better than most cars!)

I just read that Honda is coming out with a Fit Hybird for 2009 model year. That should boost it up there in the 50-60 MPG range I would think. I'll be watching as I want to buy another Hybid. We love my wifes Prius and average 46.1 MPG in the first 10,000 miles.

I thought it was only called Fit in Japan. In Australia it's called Honda Jazz, and has a reputation (apparently) of being easy to steal.
I sat in the new model Fit last year but I found that it had a major design fault - the new design has a sloping windscreen which severely limits visibility for tall people - I'm only 183cm (ok, 6 feet) tall - as my head was touching the ceiling. I would have a hard time seeing the overhead traffic lights if I was waiting for them to change to green. ;-Þ |

It is called Fit in the USA. It's probably not at all high on thieves' lists here. They tend to go for the performance cars

I have a co-worker who has one and loves it. He's about 5'9" (175 cm) and does not have a problem with his height, but he says I'd be a tight fit (I'm 6 feet). |

I get about 38-40 driving around town. 48 was the economy on the 301 mile trip. I am not puffing up the numbers at all. If I were just doing city driving I think it might drop to 32 or so, but that is still much better than my other car. I was surprised as well when I took it over several mountain passes about 12,000ft above sea level and it never bogged down. I was able to do 65 up any mountain road even with the 109hp engine.
We have put 5 adults in this car without any problems. Next years model (09') they are supposedly going to move the dash forward 5" giving it the same amount of room as the standard civic. As it is right now there is more room in this car than my Subaru Legacy. My wife is able to sit with the kids (in between the car seats) without any problems. In the Subaru it is really tight.
My dealer told me it is the number one selling Honda in America right now. So next year they are going to start equipping it with some of the more luxury features. And according to what I have read the Hybrid in America will be called the "Jazz" and it should get really good mileage. |

In Washington and Oregon, if your gas mileage starts to get to good, they just add more ethonol to the gas. We're losing about 10% in power and gas mileage to it right now.
I get about 18 mpg highway with my Durango Hemi, but when I look at the comparable sized cars (inside size) including vans (we also have a 1996 Town and Country min van that gets about 25) and smaller SUV's they don't get any better gas mileage. Buying a little subcompact shoe box just isn't practicable for us so we pay the price for gas and cut back in other ways (like millions of other Americans are starting to do). I wish the US would come out with good electric car myself.

| I heard on the news this morning that they expect it to hit $7 a gallon by the end of the year. That would make it $70 just to fill up my fit. If that happens I will have to pitch a tent right next to my work and camp out during the week. |

| My parents say they're looking at buying a fit. I'm sad that it'll probably mean they'll sell the BMW. Funny thing tho, they'll probably keep the Mercedes 13mpg gas guzzler. |

Not sure about the Fit but it sounds like it according to Jason. The Toyota Prius certainly does. I was amazed how much room they have. It is a much more roomy car than my old Audi and seats three adults in the back with plenty of leg room. The leg room stays even with the front seats all the way back which I found refreshing compared to other similar cars. |

Urrk feel you pain on teh gas prices, i have a mini van and that takes $65 to fill the tank and I get about 350 miles on the highway in that thing. My MG cost 30 dollars to fill up and i get about 200 miles to a tank.
Now my Dads car LOL,, it goes 8 miles per gallon. |
