I submitted mine. (I had three to choose from) No expectations for mine. I'm putting the image out there more for feedback than any hope for a high score. My abstracts tend to get hammered but I took a different approach to this one so I'm curious how it will play out.

You can take a picture of a little girl cavorting around in a field of daisies and its a portrait of a little girl cavorting around in a field of daisies. It would be hard to see it as an abstract picture. This is what I meant by object-as-subject, the object portrayed being the little girl and the subject being one and the same.

You could, however, take the same picture and call it 'Joy of Spring', thus (arguably) abstracting the subject (joy of spring) from the object (girl cavorting etc.).

As for selling it to the voters...

And the difficult thing is going to be able to attract the viewer to your photo without using filters that would change viewers description of the photo, or adding new shapes or features creating the abstract effect.

I'm not taking any chances. I titled my "Abstract picture conveying happiness".
09/28/2008 11:12:39 PM · #104
I've put one in, changed it and then went back to the original. LOL I like them both, and although they are similar, I think the one I chose suits more, but who am I to say? It is such an obtuse idea. I'm curious to see what others enter.

Good luck everyone. :~)

What if it makes me sad when I see it? Or if it makes me mad? What if I makes me give you a 1 in a fit of rage? Sooo many questions...

Is it just me or are a lot of the entries in this challenge NOT abstracts?? Either that or I interpreted it differently because I feel like I went in a different direction than most of them...

It's not you.

its each of our interpretations of abstract, so there will never be a challenge where all the photos are the "same". that would be rather boring dont you think?
09/29/2008 01:00:08 AM · #110
Yeah but they should be a little bit abstract surely.....some of them aren't at all, by any interpretation. Oh well. Mine is tanking already.

I have to say I agree.

A lot of them are not abstract for sure (IMO). Compared to other challenges where I would see <5% of DNMCs, this one has a huge chunk that are potentially DNMC. Again, in just my opinion.

I actually voted on every image without looking at the title.

I wanted to feel the emotion of the ABSTRACT image, without any help from the title.
Some images have worked, but gee, there are a lot of images that are NOT abstract, let alone emotive.

I started voting....but by 31% I had to get outta there. I was getting confused! Some images were abstract...with no emotion...some were emotion with no abstract....a few were abstract and emotion and others were just a mess!!!! No more!
09/29/2008 08:58:07 AM · #115
Without comments, it's hard to tell if my photo is scoring so poorly because it's simply bad, or if it's just not abstract enough.

I had a different image entered and then changed it in the final hour after reading this thread and the encouragement to expand one's definition of "abstract" -- :-/

Ahh Judi - then they were right on topic for this challenge which required (in part) ... stimulates an emotional response in, the viewer. - Looks like they worked on you - SMILE!

Well I thought my pic was kinda pretty to look at and I've got 2 nice comments but an awful score.

Looks like the overnight voting was significantly more optimistic... Train wreck avoided.

I love the discussion of 'Abstract' that has gone on in this thread.
There are as many meanings of abstract as there are artists/photographers.

For example, on the point of realism:
I think of the great abstract painter, Kandinsky, who frequently used
perfectly recognizable objects - out of context - to make his abstract point.

It occurs to me that everyone who entered this Challenge interpreted
'Abstract' and came up with a personal solution.

I am having a wonderful time enjoying the results.

Talk about a broad interpretation. I can tell by my opening scores, that I definately went in the wrong direction. I going to assume that anything Clockwork Orange will do well in this challenge. I went with something pretty normal and used shadows to cover all but the emotional state of a sublect. LOL and I don't mean that in the normal sense... Lot's O Luck

I changed my direction after reading this thread and seeing what people seemed to think was abstract. After looking at the photos submitted I should have stuck to my original idea that showed recognizable objects, because my submission is tanking. It will be interesting to see the top photos in this challenge.

If I see any of the entries with a recognizable face/thing win ribbons in this challenge, I have my choice awards ready (, along with many other coveted ones) for the deserving candidates, dont worry:-)
