This is beginning to p!ss me off so PLEASE help me.

I've installed PS over the years and never had an issue...till now.

I've got a copy of 7 from way back. But CS4 won't upgrade from 7 (so i've heard. I've not tried that).
My legit, activated, in use version is an upgrade I downloaded from Adobe from 7 to CS3 over a year ago. It is running under XP Pro.

I have a copy of CS3e (not legit). It will install and run.
Iv'e a copy of CS3 mastersuite (not legit) It will install and run.

I got a new machine that will be taking over the editing work. I want to put CS4 on it. It's Vista 64 - my first experience with Vista in any way.

OK, since i can't Upgrade from 7 to 4, I figured I'd throw one of teh non-legit (but i have serial numbers and can register it) on the new machine. Used to be all the upgrade (or any upgrade) wanted to see was a registered copy on the machine.

I start CS4 upgrade from the CD (i paid extra to get a CD this time) and it asks for the serial number of the upgrade, it accepts it. Then a second window pops up that says it sees nothing 'old' on there, please enter a serial number. I have 2 of them - one from the CS3 installation on that machine (running, registered) and one from my legit version (which lists it as 'activated').
None of these other copies are running.

It will not accept any serial number I type in.
Now I can 'deactivate' the CS3 copy i'm using on the other machine, but I still need to work on there until I can get the new unit up and broke in, HDs installed, new vid card and dual monitors...and I've never deactivated an adobe product to know what may, or may not, happen.

Does adobe offer any support on their products? I don't see a damned thing with their software!

there is a chance that your not legit #'s are known & blocked

but more likely
you can not upgrade MasterSuite with standalone PSCS4
nor can you upgrade Creative suite with standalone PSCS4
you can ONLY upgrade standalone PSCS3 with PSCS4

did this last year with Creative suite PSC2 educational to standalone PSCS3
doesn't work .. now way, no how ..

ended up paying for the upgrade & upgrading my employers PSCS2 -> 3 & now 3 -> 4
& now it is reg. in my name .. & the edu. Creative suite PSC2 is now on the laptop...

The website is pretty clear on which products can be used for upgrade. I didn't want the entire damn suite that I have upgraded, only Photoshop, so I tried. I even spent an hour on the telephone with Adobe, and it ain't possible. If you have a suite, you have to upgrade to a suite, and you need legit numbers to do it. I ended up getting a refund on PS and buying the whole suite upgrade.

I actually just had a student complain about loading CS3 onto her computer. It too is running VISTA and she had tons of trouble getting it downloaded. I will talk to her tomorrow and see what she did but the problem is stemming from VISTA, not CS4. This is why my next computer is going to be a MAC.

To start with I have 3 vista boxes and an XP64 box running legit copies of CS3 design premium and CS3 Web Premium and had NO issues installing and they are both upgrades from previous suites. Now for CS4, I ordered both equivalent upgrade versions of CS4 Design and Web Premium suites and got boxed versions as well. To my surprise on installing them they did NOT ask for any previous serials and one box was a fresh install with NO Adobe software on it. All I did was enter the new serial I got with both suites and installed with NO problems at all. on all 4 boxes...

I recently had to have my work laptop rebuilt. I had Ps CS3 running on there (second copy on my CS3 standalone license). I had upgraded my home computer to Ps CS4, and I did not want to load CS4 on the work laptop... but I could not activate CS3 again, since I had had two copies activated (and had no chance to deactivate on the work laptop (hardware failure).
So I simply fired up a chat window off the Adobe support site, and described my problem. They reset my activations on CS3, and I am now good to go; took 10 minutes.

I'll try removing the suite and see what happens.
I don't know where my PS7 disk is - i got the upgrade to 3 and then upg to 4...i shouldn't have to install all of it as obviously the CS4 UPG disk has all the code for the program.

When it didn't find a legit version it asked for a serial number - i gave it that from the legit CS3 - it still wasn't happy. That is kind of my concern!

Getting a new computer is a pain in the butt. Now I'm fighting with colorvision - can't DL the vista drivers unless you register, but you can't register via the program if it doesn't see the color device attached...catch 22!
So I can register directly at the site, but then have to wait for a confirmation email...

Update:

Every attempt to install CS4 resulted in a screen that asked for the CS3 serial number. I opened my running legit version of CS3 to find the serial number. I found it...or so I thought. From within CS3 what they call the serial number is 20 numbers - 5 groups of 4 digits.

A bit of frustration later and I found my CS3 upgrade box, the retail box. On it is the serial number - the same 20 digits PLUS four more on the end!

So the serial number is 24 digits long, NOT 20. Apparently you cannot get PS/CS3 to give up the real, complete serial number!

Yes, that's true. What I did was take my last physical box, from CS2, and put *all* my CD cases in there, all the way back to Version 4. When I need to reference an old serial number, there they are. ALso, for all downloaded products, I keep the SNs and any other activation related information in a text file within the folder where I put the download. If I need a serial number, I know exactly where to find it.
