It is difficult to make case for nikon. I remember loooooooonnggggg time ago there were threads about how someone's nikon fell in lake (or water). Nikons are somewhat hydrophilic. |
Good to know, or they'd be hydrophobic, in which case they'd have rabies, and all Nikon owners would have to get rabies shots in their tummies :-) |

3. 3 feet
4. Stairs of rolling cruise ship
5. Never used here
6. Oh crap! This is only day 2 of my 16 day Greece / Italy trip!!!
7. No, it did not survive. It fell apart in pieces in my hand. I spent most of the next day in Rhodes Greece trying to find a camera shop that could replace it. Finally found a camera store that carried more than point and shoot cameras - they took one look at it and laughed when I asked if it could be fixed. They sold me an inferior replacement for about $350. Not a great way to start a long vacation trip. |

1. $600 lens, $100 filter
2. Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8
3. 4 feet
4. Asphalt
5. n/a - dropped prior to joining.
6. "Oh $#!@", actually was worried more about the D300 it was attached to. Then kicking myself for leaving it on the tonneau cover of my truck. Was rushing to get a picture of my house for a Xmas card, walked away a few step and heard a tumbling thud sound.
7. Filter was shattered, bent the threads to the filter/lens, a crack in the inside plastic part of the lens. It "stutters" on autofocus on the D300 but can still autofocus (kind of), can still manually focus. But I really don't use it anymore, just a paper weight now... Was getting over it until this thread...kicking myself again for being an idiot... (Nothing wrong with the camera though. The lens took the brunt of it.)

No, it's not.....there *are* less Nikon people who have dropped their equipment.
Ask Jason DrAchoo about dropping his Nikon 5D into water......
Oh, WAIT!!!!
A 5D is a CANON.

Put another 'Canon' on the list.....
1. Price: Approximately $2 200 AUS
2. Name: Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS
3. Distance to impact: From the top of a fully extended tripod...(about four feet).....of course it still had the Canon 5D body attached to it!
4. Surface impacted onto: dirt, gravel and grass
5. Highest DPC score with it: : 6.9394
6. Your reaction: I only said the word 'F__k' once, because I was standing in the middle of a fairly liberated wedding party... but it did seem to get their attention! Maybe, because of the volume!... The B & G were across the lake, (at sunset), they were the focus of the proposed shot...... they didn't seem hear my bad language.....I heard the official photographer saying. 'don't worry....this happens all the time! ....with a big cheesy smile, that was so fake that I'm gonna get it in print next time she does it!!....
7. Did it survive: .....tentatively picked it up, cleaned the front glass with my shirt and ...... reattached to the tripod ...and totally blew the next three shots...(they probably would have done better than my other 'missed focus' challenge entry)....both body and soul seem to working well....took 1200 images last week-end at another wedding......... Working too well!!! ...it's taken 6 hours to cull to 600 images.....

4. Surface impacted onto - Concrete garage floor, bounced 2-3 times too!
5. Highest DPC score with it - ?
6. Your reaction - OHHHH $H!T
7. Did it survive - Can't even find a scratch on it? Works great.
Edit to add:
This was the second drop of this lens. Almost forgot it was dropped on the beach during a lens change, in moist sand! Lots of careful cleaning and it was good as new.

1. $100ish? Came with my d70s
2.Nikon AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G IF-ED
3.4 feet
4. Landed right on the concrete driveway
5. N/A
6. Oh shit. Oh shit. Oh shit. Oh shit. It was attached to the d300 I had just purchased the day before, strap slipped off the camera (now its triple knotted and pinned together), and I snagged the strap just before the body hit the ground, but not before the lens. This was also as I was getting in the car to head to a job,
7. Nopers, the couplings broke, but the camera itself survived, which was much much much more improtant to me.

6. a mild heart attack (no, not quite, but I think I was close, LOL)
7. what do you think? Surprisingly, it did not break to small pieces (which I thought it would), it hit the ground by the mount, and bent it, also the zoom ring would not rotate anymore, and a piece of plastic with VR switch broke off, that's about it in terms of obvious damage. Still enough to make the repair out of question... Anyway, I still keep it on my desk as a reminder of my stupidity :( |
Mine hit the ground with the corner of the skylight filter and it was mounted on the camera at the time. The thing slipped off my shoulder (I'm so cool) onto tarmac. The VR switch thing flew off and the zoom ring wasn't having any more of that zooming.
I jammed the leads from the VR switch bit back into what looked like the right places, used the power of will and the assistance of implements to persuade the thing back on/in, then showed the barrel and the zoom ring who's boss by wrenching them into submission...
Goes without saying I'd given the thing up for dead before I started this mayhem, but it actually seems to work now, albeit in a graunchy sort of way. I've hidden it away for now because I don't want reminding of my stupidity for a while.
There's a difference between three feet and thirty, for which I'm grateful.

1. Price: Kit lens, sells for $120
2. Name: Canon 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6
3. Distance: 6 feet
4. Surface: Concrete, rolled into the reflecting pool in DC
5. Highest Score: 5.6169, my only submission with it
6. Reaction: =[ =[ =[
7. Survival: Yes, but it's extremely cloudy and essentially useless.
It was a pretty crummy lens anyway, so it wasn't that big of a deal. I had the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8, so I just used that until I replaced the 18-55 with the 17-40 f/4.0L. I wanted the 16-35mm f/2.8, but it was waaaay, and still is too costly. |

2. Canon 50mm f1.8 mk2
3. 4 feet
4. concrete
5. donk know
6. Oh Sh*t
7. It looked ok so I mounted it on my 300D, would not work so took off - or tried to - it became jammed, which resulted in the pins on the body of the camera to be damaged (I did use a bit of force to try and get if off), Result = Camera + lens knackered. Turned out ok though because my insurance covered it all and I replaced the 300D with my current 30D, though never replaced the f1.8 for some reason.

3 Unknown drop. It flipped out of my shooting vest when I kneeled on a rock in the water.

6 I must have left that sitting where I changed lenses last? Not.
I didn't notice it for 15 minutes. I finished the trip with older manual lenses and enjoyed the practice with them.
7 It's a fisheye lens now.
