A free study ribbon is my ultimate goal on this site. Now what exactly does it take to get one of these prized ribbons? Something different? Something cliche, but just incredibly beautiful? The reason I ask is because I am trying to decide between two images for this month's FS. Both are different from my typical style, but the one really is a totally different scene. Hmmm, this is difficult. Any advice? |

Go with the one you like best.

Better not to think of it...!
Do our best & submit. I also confused many times with the same question & have done some mistakes about selecting correct one. But then onwards I submit the image with which I am happy & don't think what image voters will appreciate. Voters are unpredictable whereas our choice is forever.

Keep with the landscapes - they always do well. |

Let me quote posthumous on his article about voting,
"When looking at art, you want an experience that seems new, unfamiliar. Certain parts of it will probably be familiar, but they will be combined in a new way or go in an unexpected direction."
So between an incredibly beautiful cliche or a totally different scene, I usually go with the "totally different scene" |

Thanks for all of the great advice guys. I think I should probably go with the slightly different one. I like it better and I think the thumbnail definitely "pops" :) |

Looking through past FS challenges, I can't find any principle to win ribbon in FS. However, the landscape photos seem to have a little bit more advantage than other type photos.
I think the top 20 in free study all have the potential to win ribbon, the gap between them are very small.
So, first, the entry has to be "very excellent" to enter top 20, then "lucky" is the most important factor to win a ribbon. |

Saw this thread started by you Pillip and I have to comment. You of all people told me not long ago that it wont be long before I saw my name on the front page. Dont know if you can recall. Well, This does not need to be said but I will and echo many others sentiment. The missing element in you not having a ribbon in free study is simple. TIME. Keep doing what you are. I can only dream of your work. Dont take pictures for ribbons or people but stick with your style and what you love best. It will happen.
I guess my comment helps as much as yours helped me at the time. I did not believe it...
Another thing I would like to add...is that to be married helps...or maybe girlfriend. If they love you and know you well...their advice will be worth gold. Mine is the best measuring stick for my work... dont let her know however..Im supposed to be the pro :) |

That advice is 50/50 with me. My wife helped me pick my still life shot which is doing quite good at the moment, She also helped me pick my graffiti shot which is not doing near as well as she thought or I had hoped it will. Perhaps she only loves me 50% of the time which seems posible. :)

Water landscape with great cloud formation and a sunset with a couple hugging each other and maybe a seagull or two flying above. Voila, a blue.
eta. After looking at your profile I see you have this type of imagery down pat. Keep it up and you'll get a ribbon in a FS.

My advice is to move to Iceland and take lots of pictures of tiny, longhaired horses on the beach! |

You need to shoot for the red in a free study. Will fill out the collection. :-) (Seriously, with your average, it's just a matter of time as many have already said.) |

When I look at all my top scoring entries the one things that strikes me is that they are all pretty innocuous compared to my lower scoring work. Even my nude Ribbon is super-duper-safe, all ways around. The mellower the subject matter...horses, landscapes, frogs, ladybugs, birds (sharp focus eagles, hawks and owls), people that are pleasing to the eye, the better your chances at high scores. Stick with standard presentations. Avoid odd dof choices or risque crops. Frog macro, rule of thirds, with a bokeh'd multi-color background will always do well...give it a try but make sure the frogs entire face is sharp. Rich green skin and red eye's...easy Top 10.

I'd be quite happy to move to Cape Town to try and get a ribbon in ANY challenge. The climate is much better than Iceland too.

I don't have a FS ribbon.
But I think you need to bring the viewer closer to God in some way.
So choose the image that does that.
If God's not your cup of tea ... replace "God" with "the meaning of existence" in the above sentence. Good luck. |

To add, the closer the easier it becomes. Headshots and upper torsos are always easy to do well with because your subject doesn't have to do much except stare into the camera and let their genes or the stylist/makeup artist do all the heavy lifting. If your equipment is decent and you can perform the bare minimum (i.e. good exposure, low noise, sharp focus and without harsh light) then you have to work hard to actually screw things up. The same tends to apply with landscapes that we see here do well. The beauty is already there in plain sight so if you have the proper equipment and have access to it you can't screw things up. |

Unfortunately, DPC has much lower standards than this. If you did that then you'd be clearing the hurdle by a few miles, IMO.
ETA: On second thought, it wouldn't ribbon without enhancements. If God exists and had an entry where would it place? Not very high if he he entered a seascape but didn't blur the water or saturate the sky or a portrait of a model that didn't have makeup on or wasn't neatimaged afterwards. Unless the subject looks better than what God intended the meaning of existence wouldn't matter.

"Be Not Inhospitable to Strangers, Lest They be Angels in Disguise..."
This image has pretty much everything you want to avoid...
Unattractive, overweight model/subject
Centered composition
A little Grain added in PP
Distracting person (right) and laundry basket
A message that draws conflict
WYSIWYG. I posted this shot somewhere and it seemed to enrage a few people while others were saddened and sympathetic.
