Well, they ARE judging both now, of course, it's just that greater weight than before is given to technicals. Gymnastics is in the same boat as figure skating, the floor exercises are getting more technical and less artistic.

The rest of the world is kinda like DPC, actually :-)

"He over-dialed it--hit f6.3 and had to wind it back to 5.6. If the judges noticed, that could cost him some. Oh, NO, he had to remove his eye from the viewfinder to find the DOF preview button! Oh, I hate to see a stumble like that! That just cost him the Gold right there. He knows it. Yep, he just switched from RAW to JPEG Only and Full Auto, and he's chimping--he has given up....."

You know, I watched most of the pairs and the men's short program last night, and it doesn't seem to me there's all that much more emphasis on "technicals" like jumps. In fact, at 3-4/program I thought maybe they'd cut back on that aspect. Maybe the choreography isn't as original, inspired, or "artistic" as it used to be, but I really don't think there's that much less of it. And I think the scores still have both an "artistic" and a "technical" component ...

What I'm really waiting to see is for one of the women to sling one of the guys around in that "Death Spiral" move -- like in real life ... ;-)

Torvill & Dean's "Bolero" was absolutely jaw-dropping when performed. Not sure any single skate has every quite matched that.

GenE - I think I did see a couple of "fun" bits on the skates after the competition, where the female did the lifts - kinda fun!

Oftentimes, the best skating event at the olympics is the Exhibition, after all the medals have been awarded: no judging, low pressure, few constraints, nothing mandatory.

And Melethia is spot on (as usual): Torvill and Dean's Bolero was fantastic

... and so was the one in 10 with Bo Derek... oh wait, I don't recall seeing any skating... oh well.

I thought Plushenko sucked artistically. I mean, he IS the most hated skater, but he doesn't have to act so cold-blooded and unpassionate.

...eh, hem....we're starting to date ourselves here kids, lol!

Torvill and Dean...for sure! THAT was something fun to watch. I'll continue to watch, but flailing armons and coasting for 4 seconds or better to prep for the big jump isn't entertaining.
(Where's that nasty little Tonya Hartding when you need her...) :P

I think the photography, in general, has been terrific to watch!

Yes, it makes me dizzy trying to catch shots of the photogs at the skating rinks.... But I do watch for the photographers. Nice to know I'm not the only one. :-)
