pure irony would now be
making a red/blue pill picture with your post in the background
to make the picture, or not :) |

Must someone always do this? I propose commenting on the current challenge, specially ideas, should be forbidden, for a lack of a better word, until the submission period is over. This might actually have been someone's real idea and you just spoiled it, way to go!

it should be spoiled.
they should think of another idea because that one is cliched and probably would not do well :)

Hmmm... I think there is a forum called "Current Challenge" for a reason. =] What else would you talk about since one thing we don't allow is talking about entries that are in the active voting stage? Just some food for thought. |

The point I was trying to make is that we shouldn't spoil things for anybody by making comments like the one made by the original poster.

tis a good point, for which i humbly kowtow and apologise profusely. only, you must if only slightly and grudgingly sort of admit, that if pointing out the obvious early on to encourage the sci-fi fans to think of something beyond their first thought has to be of some benefit to the world at large. teeny tiny bit, yes? no? |

I dont know about anyone else but I've never had to choose between a blue or red pill but maybe that's because I'm not a fictional character in a movie!
Threads like this usually point out the highly obvious cliche idea that in the long run would best be avoided. It should be clear that voters dont always vote on technical merit and although opinions expressed in threads like this are usually tongue-in-cheek that opinion carries over and manifests itself in scores. That will happen whether a thread was started or not.
It is also better that a thread like this is posted before the voting rather than during voting as at least those who did think of that idea could change their image. When you have already entered it and then see threads like 'Look at all the X pics in the challenge' then it more directly effects voting.

What's the red pill/blue pill reference? That one would have been lost on me...
A cliche running through my mind was regarding M&Ms...Plain or Peanut?

Choices?
Is this a new challenge, and if it is, then why is it not listed on the website?
I'm so confused. Someone help. |

It's there under Open Challenge. Perhaps you need to refresh the page? |

Another cliche I thought of is the 'road not taken' idea...a see a lot of shots of forked roads and crossroads in the future. Fortunately, these could be really beautiful shots and I don't think one should hesitate submitting this type of shot. Sometimes a cliche is a cliche because the theme is universal.

It's from the Matrix. Neo has to choose one or the other (to see life how it really is or to be returned to the life he knows).
Anyhow, I had a different idea for the challenge, but now I should do this one, just to see if I can do it really really well! Haha! JK. I really don't want to do that. Who knows if I'll even enter. I've been such a slacker lately. I need to pick up my camera and not take photos of my cats for once! |

red pill/blue pill ref. is from Neo's choice in the 'Matrix'.
As for the comments about this thread, it is humor. You know, fun, entertaining, laughs, joke, ha-ha, lighten up. You will notice there are quite often posts like this making light of the obvious cliches for the current challenge. They are usually pretty entertaining.
Besides, that doesn't mean that anyone can't use the idea now. I'm sure you will probably see several entries like that. Maybe some will evenly purposely use the idea after seeing it here. Maybe even it would be a good choice now, because after seeing it posted as a cliche, one could reason that people won't use it now, so it would end up not being copied. ;-) You never know, someone could take a great shot of the red/blue pill idea, technically great, awesome composition etc. and take the blue ribbon!
Just my thoughts. You know me...always trying to squelch the negative vibes man !
Have fun. Mean people suck!

I've actually seen that movie (if you're referring to the first one) two or three times but I can't quite recall the red pill/blue pill thing. To be fair, I have to see a movie or read a book at least three times because I generally miss details in the first viewing. I actually had to see Pulp Fiction a second time before I caught on to the sequences of events. I just watched it as if it had a straightforward narrative. I once read a book that had about 20 pages missing and didn't even notice until my dad read the same book and complained about it. :D

Pulp Fiction is definitely a movie you need to see a few times to really appreciate anyway. I mean, I liked it the first time, but I liked it even better the 2nd...
As for the Matrix, it's pretty early on in the movie. It's in a dream like place, all white. He's talking with Morpheus. It's the time in the movie he makes the decision... before the whole story begins really. I never saw the 2nd or 3rd yet. I really want to though. I just somehow missed them.
Back to Choices: this one is going to be really fun I think. I can see creativity really running strong with this topic. |

A famous Will Rogers quote "When you come to a fork in the road..... take it." Could he have meant take a picture?

Dan - see the EDITING rules on the challenges. (The answer to your question is, "Yes, but it depends..."

OK - just to whet your appetite - you can think of it like this:
a) You can always use Photoshop.
b) In basic editing you can NOT do any "individual" or "groups of pixels" manipulation. All adjustments must be done to the ENTIRE image.
c) Photoshop FILTERS, such as render clouds are out.
d) In Advanced Editing, you can do a lot more, but can NEVER use multiple images and can NEVER add something to the image that wasn't there.
You may want to look at other threads - there have been many on the subject.

Funny enough, this was actually the very first idea I toyed with. I've already submitted a photograph, but I'm gonna keep my eyes open for that fork in the road... ;)
