Set it up. Decided that the past-ripe cherry tomatoes I had would be a good subject. I tried photographing them inside, but I don't have an external flash and the incandescent light was really messing with the colors. So I went out on the sidewalk next to my apartment, squished a few, and started taking shots. It was difficult to fine a time when there weren't cars on the street or people walking by. DoF was fixed by the camera's 'macro' function, white balance was set to cloudy, it may be -0.6 EV. I got a few weird looks and some 'are you ok?'s. I liked the blue background, and the stop signs.

Effective

I really like the way the background has a blue look to it as it makes the subject of the picture stand out.
04/27/2002 04:43:00 PM
Very imaginitive setting for this still life.
04/27/2002 10:46:00 AM
Yep, that's a transition. Did you get some weird looks, maybe?
04/27/2002 08:36:00 AM
i like the texture and colour of the tomatos, i think i would have liked more focus on the seeds and squished one, but i really like it
04/27/2002 05:43:00 AM
great colors. fabulous depth of field.
04/26/2002 03:04:00 PM
Ewwww. good clarity though.
04/26/2002 01:38:00 PM
Background is kind of distracting...
04/25/2002 09:26:00 PM
Cool subject matter. Great job.
04/24/2002 02:28:00 PM
I would have liked to have seen the background more blurred to give a better impact. Maybe even cropped tighter on the tomatoes
04/24/2002 12:42:00 PM
people might bust you on the white balance, but I think it works nicely with a blue cast. the depth of field is quite nice, but did you try it with a bit more depth?
04/24/2002 10:59:00 AM
Yuck!
04/24/2002 10:12:00 AM
yuck!! Great yucky texture
04/24/2002 07:16:00 AM
colors, framing, subject matter, and stop signs in the background. all rule.
04/24/2002 04:06:00 AM
I like it..
04/23/2002 11:17:00 PM
I like the colours in this but feel it would have fitted the theme more if there had been a tomato that wasn't rotting.
04/23/2002 04:59:00 PM
I think this would have been better if you got sharper focus on some actual rot or mould. I'm in two minds about the blue colour balance; I think on balance it would have worked to get a more lurid colour out of the tomatos.
04/23/2002 04:13:00 PM
Mmmmmm.....lovely. Great shot with interpretation of the theme well thought out.
04/23/2002 12:31:00 PM
I really like the composition and contrast in this picture.
04/23/2002 04:36:00 AM
I like the colors in this shot... good work!
04/23/2002 04:03:00 AM
I liked this shot! A good idea, especially like the squashed one at the front. The colour contrasts really well with the background.
04/22/2002 08:17:00 PM
This is powerful.
04/22/2002 08:12:00 PM
different..
04/22/2002 08:05:00 PM
nice color, transition not apparent, maybe if there was a few fresh tomatoes
04/22/2002 04:26:00 PM
nice close-up, main subject focused just right
04/22/2002 02:39:00 PM
A very interesting and solid shot. I think I would have liked it a little better if the blue had been turned down a bit. Still, a great shot!
04/22/2002 02:22:00 PM
Nice job.
04/22/2002 02:09:00 PM
i really like the contrasting color.
04/22/2002 01:22:00 PM
neat idea.
04/22/2002 12:50:00 PM
Bad description
04/22/2002 12:36:00 PM
I like the composition but a different background might have been better suited for this, unles syou are trying to tell me that this town is rotting. :)
04/22/2002 12:02:00 PM
I like the tomatoes, but would have preferred less background
04/22/2002 10:56:00 AM
Colors are a bit off, the background is too blue. The subject is nice though
04/22/2002 10:13:00 AM
Personally, I think I would have liked this more if the tones hadn't been quite so cool.
04/22/2002 10:13:00 AM
contrast to high for my taste
04/22/2002 10:10:00 AM
good (but gross) find! Very well shot too - like the depth of field and the two 'stop' signs give a nice repeatition - was that deliberate or happy co-incidence ? Nicely done.
04/22/2002 08:11:00 AM
The color shift is disturbing to me.
04/22/2002 07:53:00 AM
very good idea by the photographer
04/22/2002 07:46:00 AM
I love it when we get on our hands and knees to get a good shot. This is great and it definetly fits the "Transitions" title.
04/22/2002 07:17:00 AM
Nice shot, I assume tomatoes, but these things look a little wicked to be tomatoes. :)
04/25/2002 12:33:00 PM
Very blue light, but good transition
04/23/2002 02:34:00 PM
good vibrant colours
04/22/2002 03:09:00 AM
I love this picture! Great job on getting low and close. I wish we could make the background go away :)
