I really had a hard time with the editing on this. The b/g was way too light and you could see the cord in between the lights on the string. I tried a b&w version that made it easier to fix those problems but I really wanted to do this in color so I had to adjust Sofia where I wanted her and then on a second layer I got the b/g nice and dark using Viveza and used the b/g eraser to bring her back in.

Oh, and lest any dnmc trolls accuse me of having the bokeh in the b/g, the lights are almost directly in the front of the camera with Sofia behind them.

One of my fav's and one of my more underrated shots IMO

This is some really good stuff. I love her pose and expression. She looks as if she was dreaming and it's very convincing. The bokeh only adds to the dreamy effect. Love it.

I know how you feel about the amount of light getting in. I did a similar shot! (linkz)

I controlled mine by leaving the shutter open, keeping the room dark and using a burst of flash, then moving the lights into frame and turning them on for just moment.

I kept my aperture wide open despite the light to keep the bokehz as round as possible.

Took a few goes to get something that kinda worked, I settled with what I got.

I like the portait very much as it has very nice lighting. Not sure the lights add much. Also nothing denotes the llghts are in the foreground -- it could be just as easily background.
