This is an excellent photo! I'm totally new to photography, and know almost nothing, but I know what I like!

shohn,
You have given "The Rose" a very thorough and fair critique, and I am fully satisfied. You pointed out two items that you feel could have been improved, and I can't agree more. I never noticed the lone white pixel until I was finished with the post prosessing. That is my bad as I have a tendency to be very impatient when it comes to using Photoshop. This picture was a blessing as all that I felt was necessary to do was a crop and unsharpen mask. I was actually quite taken with the picture as it came from the camera. My E-10 has three settings on the sharpness of the focus and contrast. I used the setting that Olympus recommended for internet use. I have had a hard time determining the difference in the three settings. It probably requires a more trained eye to see. That may be why the petals are soft against the background. I feel the picture has a kind of eirie look to it anyway.
I think that all of the CC embers do an outstanding job volunteering for this assignment and you can't be praised enough. Thanks for a wonderful critique, now go out and have some fun getting some more great pictures.

Hey Autool --
Wow, you even looked up the verse. Real work. Of course, that makes more personal. It's such a shame that we can't add comments for judging, it makes a big difference to me. I'm thinking that because the title of your photograph is so simple, it passed by a lot of people's heads that there actually was a song called, "The Rose".
This is such a wonderful picture. There isn't much needed to go from 5th to First.
Technically this picture is good. I only have two comments here. There is one pixel that seems out of place in the lower left corner just below where the bottom thorn. A minute white spot.
Secondly, the picture seems a little soft around the edges especially where the rose comes in contact with the background.
Composion.
Great work here. No way would I be able to suggest anything different than what you have done.
I would think that there would be some value to doing a whole personal study of roses with differnt vases, backgrounds, rose colors and rose types. My first take on this was that I wanted to try a rose with a cut lead crystal vase.

Such a simple subject and yet such a strong photo. This gets a 10 from me because of it's incredible detail and vibrancy. I want to reach out and touch it. I almost think I can smell it! The black background is very effective and I like the subtle use of DOF - only the stem in the lower corner is out of focus - spot on! Colour and lighting are excellent. This is the kind of image I can imagine people dismissing as cliched, or lacking in imagination, but I think it's so excellently executed that it has very strong appeal regardless! |

In terms of lighting, exposure, focus, you're dead on. This is a more than technically sound image, it definately has an emotional component - the image conveys beauty. Some might think its a simple interpretation of a title but I think it works more than on just the literal level. My one gripe is the square format. I've tried looking at the photo cropped on the top and bottom and no matter how I do it, I always find the landscape format more appealing - maybe because the rose seems to be leaning towards the left, not sure. Overall, a shot to be very proud of. |

This is absolutely the most beautiful shot of a rose that I have ever seen in my life, and that is no exageration. This also is my favorite colored one. Thank you for this photo. There's nothing to say except OMG! You deserve this 10 and to be first. It will be in my favorites. PTL |

That's a very nice macro - great lighting, focus and depth of field. Framing and background are also perfect. Plus you have a great specimen/subject to work with. Well done. |

great detail in this shot. It seems a little overexposed or too contrasty, I don't know it just feels misty. |

Beautiful macro of a rose almost wish I could smell it. The light is almost too bright on the yellow part of the rose, but that is just my opinion. 7.
Take my comments for what they are worth for I am just a novice with a new camera. Dodo |

Beautiful. The color is wonderful. Your focus and clarity are great. Really sharp and crisp. Detail stands out perfectly. Great choice of the black background. Really makes the rose jump out of the photo. The DOF is good, I like how the focus tapers off on the stem. Placement of the subject within the photo is nice. Good angle and framing/cropping. Excelent shot. Good luck in the challenge. |

Having a black background is not suggestive of the song. Pinks or some other colours would be more suggestive of the song. |

Perhaps a slightly more interesting background might've helped me rate it higher. |
