This is my grand-daughter - she loves the strangest things and will carry them around and play with them for long periods of time. When I read the Pet Rock description and saw that the "pet" could be any object, I thought of how much Tessa loves her things - not just grandpa's shoes but socks, empty Kleenex boxes, plastic cards which she "drives" by scooting them around on the carpet, etc. - often to the exclusion of her many "real" toys. So I decided to try to get a good shot of her with one of these objects. I was warned that this will take hits because the object is not a rock, because there's a kid in it, because it's a snapshot, because it's not obviously expert editing, because the eyes are dark, because there's some motion blur, and because it looks like a shoehorn. Well, there is a kid in the shot. It's not a rock because the challenge allowed for other things. It's a snapshot because I thought that kind of setting would be more appropriate than a set-up, studio look (which I don't have anyway). It is expert editing because I took advantage of the rule set to finish off the the heel of the shoe and replace her blurred left foot with parts of other shots. I tried to lighten the eye area but she squints outdoors. And it's not a shoehorn. We went out three different days and this was the best I got - it's not easy to get a 13 month old to pose.
I am very grateful for the warnings - they keep my expectations for the shot low so I won't be disappointed and they give me insight into the DPC voter profile. I have decided to enter anyway - she makes me smile every time I look at her so it will be a very nice week :) |

You let your kid carry your shoes now? Love the smile. |

Cute shot.
Nice black and white.
Great title!
Processing seems a little off to me, but it's a lovely idea. |

i like the baby, but it feels like a forced fit to the challenge. Still, that didn't really hurt the score i gave it |
