Challenge: Easter Eggs (Expert Editing)

[Apr. 4th, 2013 06:23:16 AM]

It is always difficult to find a creative way to interpret challenges themes, but this one was perhaps even more problematic. I really wanted to avoid the usual Easter postcards (painted eggs, bunny, chocolate, bells, etc.), but at the same time, I wanted to stay within that spirit. So I thought hard about the subject, and decided that instead of directly depicting those common items, my approach would focus on the feeling of joy provided by Easter: children getting excited, families getting together, etc.

At this stage, I didn't have a very precise view of the project. However, given that I had to show some happiness in a way or another, I decided that I first needed an austere background, something lifeless, almost cold, so that the scene of joy would pop to the eye, as an obvious opposition in the middle of it. So I went to the sea one more time, and took various shots of the beach, despite the lack of light, the flat sky, and the cold temperature: not the best walk I've ever had!

Back at home, I quickly looked at the photos, but frankly, they were totally boring, and they inspired me nothing. So again, I spent 2 more days thinking about the topic, and finally, I decided that this need of sharing joyful moments could be symbolized by a giant egg composed of human beings, getting together, unified. Ideally, I would have used photos of different persons, but there wasn't enough time for that. After some hours of sketching the project with the help of my wife, the various positions were identified, and I photographed myself as many times as needed, using different lighting setups, to comply with the final position of each man. I also shot the big red ribbon, to give it a better Easter feeling, rather than showing just a random big egg. I was still lacking a worthy sky, so I took my camera at work three days in a row until some sun finally got through the clouds: this was quite important as my lighting setup was based on it!

I assembled everything, and finally, toned the final image using warm yellow tones, that I thought would better suit the concept than other options. I am quite pleased with the result, as I think the image manages to instantly say "Easter" to the viewer (at least it worked with my parents, which is a good test!), while being a bit different than the usual images on that theme.

Thank you very much for watching! I hope you had a fun and joyful Easter.

You never fail to give a different, unique, and/or interesting perspective to your work. As always, lighting and composition are very well done and thought out. I think it is very interesting that the main man with the splash of red ribbon tied around his neck is in a pose that is a nod to Christ on the sacrificial cross or a cross pose- that is a nice little detail that I wonder how many picked up. Congrats on on the blue!

Wonderfully done, Christophe. I guess I just don't get the vision/concept. The link between Easter eggs and the title alludes me. Undoubtedly, you'll leave great notes as always clarifying this.
