This man is someone that we met on a hike. He was so interesting - and I also kept thinking, "I just have to take his picture."... So I did - I took quite a few while he was deeply engaged in conversation with my husband. None of them were posed. Such a lovely soul.

I do realize that it does not fill the frame corner-to-corner, and I played around with some crops. However, I felt that I just couldn't take away from it - the hat, the beard, his entire face - it all adds character. So I went with as close of a crop as I could get and still include all of him.

Perhaps he would have scored higher if I had cropped to fill the frame...?


Just wanted to add for those who may be interested --- this was all natural lighting, capturing a moment in real life. It's one of my favorites. I understand why some voted it down (didn't completely fill the frame), but I'm still glad I entered it.

Wonderful candid portrait. I think you are right, some may have penalized you for not filling the frame more. Still an excellent shot.

ETA: Next time you might try stopping down to about f9. Things can get sharper around there.

He reminds me of the Islander's old fisherman logo. He retired from being a logo and now enjoys a peaceful life.

Old Man of the Sea...7 from me.

It would have done well in the Photo that Looks like a Painting challenge.

As it is, it doesn't fill the frame enough, IMHO, to score really well in this one, I fear.
