I love maple syrup so much I even make the damn stuff, so I didn't have to take out a 2nd mortgage buying syrup for this shoot!! I wanted to do something fun and original, and syrup trickling upwards onto a stack of pancakes seemed to fit the bill nicely.
The pancakes are placed atop an upside-down saucer to make it look like a lot more than the 4 made by 1 batch. The pat of butter acted as my focus point and so ended up with some syrup on it.
Then the syrup. Oh yes, there was syrup. I keep one of the archetypal flat-sided syrup bottles handy for shoots. I filled it about 2/3 full with some of batch #7 as it has a nice deep colour. I had to get the pour just right - not only to catch drops and fun stuff like that but ensure as little of my hand as possible was in the shot.
Now keep in mind that pancakes are quite porous. An awful lot of syrup got soaked up by those pancakes, so there was no need to add anything when we ate them after the shoot!
Setup: camera on tripod, pre-focused on the butter. Flash up, and mini wide-slave on floor behind set with a folded-over piece of cloth atop it to diffuse it. Reflector to the right as light falloff in a corner. Plate positioned about 3ft from camera on a small table.
pp: shot RAW, crop, brightness/contrast, vibrance/saturation, add deep red layer, dodge and burn, resize, sharpen, save for web |
