 Photographer’s Notes
I’ve been lucky in life and one element of my good luck is the opportunity to travel widely – in this case to Antarctica in February of 2006. After an overnight transit from Deception Island our ship, the MS Endeavor, arrived at Cuverville Island. At 64 degrees south latitude, we were close to, and would attempt to breach the Antarctic Circle the next day (and succeed.)

Meanwhile we used Zodiacs to explore the icebergs floating in the bay and hiked the island. We found colonies of Gentoo penguins, like the one in the photo. February is late in the Antarctic’s warm season. This chick hatched too late to survive the coming winter and the other egg probably won’t hatch at all. But loyalty is strong among all mothers and this one refused to abandon this lost cause.

critique club:

i'm not fond of this image, the subjects seem awkward and they lack that "cuteness" one expects from this moment. its not like you can pose them, though :)

the colors and details all seem to blend together and the background bleeds into the subject so there is isn't enough isolation of the subject to any appeal either.

what a wonderful capture, light seems a little harsh, but not much you can do about that, this is one of my favs in the challenge
