Tried to envision what might have happened a few million years ago, when a tribe's shamans and wise women (witches?) would have attempted to summon spirits, and probably scare/ intimidate the remainder of their tribe while doing so.
So...what was available back then? Animal hides, possibly exotic ones, cut into strange patterns. Feathers, either to simulate flight - or, as I did, to also fan the smoke up from a fire to create smokey sfx which could also be really handy if stuff like weed was also in the burn pile. Add some primitive makeup - a little charcoal or soot mixed with animal grease would have made a very simple but effective greasepaint.
So eh wala, the tribe of Snarfles coaxes forth a scary face from above.
