I literally woke up one morning with that line going through my head. I had read Daphne du Maurier's gothic stories some years ago and for some reason that one line came back to me. So I had to find me a Manderley, which is specifically a stone house.
There are many stone farmhouses around here but many have porches and/or additions stuck on them, ruining their appearance. Only one, a more modern version, seemed to fit the description of Manderley's surroundings. Used it as my source photo for the house then, after getting a shot of the stonework on a church, tried to make it look like the Manderley of dreams. Shot a cold wintry sunset to give a creepy feel to the scene. Shot some firelight inside the woodstove and put it in the windows so give a sense of someone home, but it didn't really work that well.
pp: show everything RAW, did usual global adjustments in PS, then smacked it all together and did a s**tload of NIK to it. Used a vintage camera filter, then a vignette, then I think a fog/mist filter...it's all a blur now. |
