Female analphabetism has reached alarming rates in developping countries. While there have been numerous efforts to curb this trend, social and cultural barriers are the biggest obstacles to overcome. No child should be deprived of her right to an education.

I would like to thank all of you for your comments; they were really helpful. Strange though as this may sound, I never paid much attention to the distracting shadows. By the time you brought it to my attention, I had crossed the point of no return. Nevertheless, I reopened the image in Photoshop and replaced the current background with a solid black backdrop. I also 'bleached' the whites in the image to make the pages, head scarf, and eyes stand out. I am much happier with the result now, and it's all thanks to your advice.

I like this and dark skin tones with lots of white in the picture are always a nightmare to expose. This was almost spot on. I like the obvious low light from the right side but find the big shadow distracting. A much tighter crop on the left and the top would leave all the elements still there - and as long as the plate is still there along with the shadows of the page there is still enough information to show the dramatic effect of the lighting.

I really like the expression you've captured within this photo.

I don't understand this title and how it relates to the photo. But then again, my ignorance doesn't take away from this good picture...

I like her expressive face. But there is too much empty space around... I would croped it much closer to bring out her face. Still good job.

nice snap ,you could have made the lighting effect a bit stronger to get some strong shadow effects.Could have cropped the right portion where the palte appears.

awesome picture:)
I wonder what it might have looked like cropped a little more to the right... the shadow is a littel distracting to me.

The shadow is really overpowering in this photograph.

Very very good idea, but very very bad lighting. Maybe a tighter crop would help, get rid of that harsh shadow, the edge of what looks like a dinner plate, etc. Her expression is excellent, but the quality of the photo just doesn't match the quality of the idea. I'm voting it low for those reasons mentioned, but wanted to say I really think this is an excellent idea, and model!

This is a beautiful portrait; cropping it close to the elbow and head would reduce the impact of the shadow, which I find distracting.
