I'm pretty sure you could have shot this perfectly in focus and in full color and in high definition, but much like the insects you see stuck inside panes of glass hanging on someone's wall, the end result would be rather static and lifeless. It would only serve as a trophy, a means of promoting oneself. Not this. This is different. It has tension. Everything from the slight blur of the wings to the off-kilter position of the butterfly and the fountain of bokeh in the background screams it. There's anticipation here, a flight not yet flown. This is not some trophy to mount on one's mantle. No, it's an affirmation, an appreciation of life.

I like the focus on the butterfly and flower while the rest of the tumultuous world is out of focus but about to be challenged. It's a cliche to use the word "frail" here, but I can't think of a better one. I'm sure it will prevail, at least in the near future. |

This brings to mind "Midnight in the garden of good and evil." Ominous but beautiful at the same time. |

Busy background fits nicely into something that may be caled eden, and the butterfly does show the way. |

The shallow depth of field here creates and immense and almost terrifying world behind the unassuming butterfly. |

I really enjoy busy bokeh. Your tones elevate this insect shot. |

I'm not big on insects (although they probably think I am; sorry, awful joke). But this is lovely. It's odd how a picture that normally demands colour can be so interesting, in a different way, when done mono. Not all the time, of course, but now and then it's a welcome change of pace. And this one is. Thank you. |
