The hardest hike I've ever done, The Subway Trail in Zion National Park.
Back story - this scene is at the end of the most difficult hikes I've ever done, The Subway Trail in Zion Canyon. We were determined to accomplish this hike. It requires a permit that you have to apply for 3 months in advance.
It starts with a 1 mile hike with a 400 ft drop straight down to the river. All the way down I'm thinking this will be really hard to get back up. Then it's 4 miles up the Virgin River with a 600 ft rise. The trail is basically the river. The trail is not marked except for the occasional rock cairn placed by other hikers. There are huge boulders along that way that can slow the hike to a crawl while you work your way over, around, and through them, often with water rushing over and around them. It is stunningly beautiful along the river, There are terraced water falls that you hike through, crystal clear water with fish and frogs swimming by.
4 hours after the start, you arrive at the "Subway" formation. It is a water carved tunnel with pools of emerald green water and flora growing along the walls.
After 1.5 hours of photography and rest, we started back the way we came. The hike was more difficult due to fatigue setting in. By the time we got to the part to climb back up the 400 foot "wall" you're almost too tired to keep going, but you have to get to the car. The trail is not marked and it is hard to stay on the "trail". We lost the trail a couple of times and had to back track. Not pleasant!
11 hours total time to complete the hike. We were exhausted, dehydrated, and hungry. |
