Self Portrait III: The God-Fearer

The LORD sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts.

I'd taken this image earlier in the week, and edited it, but I wasn't happy with the outcome. I re-edited it and decided to submit it. I figured, after 3 <5 challenges, one more won't hurt :)

The model is me, because I'm the only model I trust (and I work for free). I think that since I know what I want in the picture, I can do it better than trying to tell someone. I'm sort of antisocial. But not really.

I just threw on some old clothes and my Chucks and went out with a bible, set up the camera, and took a few shots. It got cold and dark pretty fast, so I just gave up. Plus, the clothes were starting to itch. This is the one I stuck with.

I anticipate 4.XXXX, possibly in the range of 4.0 to 4.5. Most probably.

Really really good...especially the subtle pain on the mostly-hidden face...

Howdy from the Critique Club!

This is a very powerful and emotive image...the colors (and lack thereof) are visually as impactful as the pose and the meaning. I do, however, see where the downfall may have been, which you probably know anyway...but DPC voters and religion usually just do not mix well, and that's a whole other story. This being an international site, with many different faiths represented (some of which do not use the bible) make it difficult for photos with religious themes to do well as a general rule. That doesn't make it a bad image, it just means it loses some appeal with voters who do not know, do not understand, or do not feel an emotional attachment with the subject matter.

If one is unfamiliar with the bible and/or the passage referred to...the correllation between it and poverty is difficult to ascertain.

All that being said, I think the shot is an interesting study with a lot of positive attributes and points upon which improvements can be made. Have fun and keep shooting! :o)

Looks like a photo better suited to a Crossroads or "Which way should I turn" type challenge.
Not quite a strong enough representation of poverty.

An excellent verse about the sovereignty of God.

His wisdom is unsurpassed and his ways no one can argue.

You have represented well!

it's a guy in good clothes who is reading a book - i don't see the connection with poverty, reading the title i assume that there is some connection in the bible - do you really expect voters to find a bible and look up the text just to understand the pic?
