Hi jgirl57:
I'm a cat lover so I find this appealing as a subject. A clever juxtaposition. I, too think a square crop of the left portion would improve the overall composition. the expressions are engaging, but there's too much els going on. The crop might focus the subject better. Given the light the way it is, I would have tried to amplify the white values. As it is there's an overall greyness that dulls the impact.
I didn't vote in this challenge (traveling and purposefully disconnected for a while), but think it would have been a 5 from me. I do think the raw material for a stronger image is here, though and could see different processing choices improving the impact and score. |

I gave you a six, but I don't know what I was thinking. It should have been a five. I must have been in a good mood :)
Why is this only worth a 5? Well...
* The lighting is extremely flat. Creates very little contrast
* The wall in the back is distracting (again, better lighting could have hidden the wall)
* The thing above the cat's head is odd and distracting
* My eyes keep jumping from the cat to toy and back again. Makes it so the cat is not the main subject
Hope you enjoy the commentary :) |

Okay, jgirl57, here goes:
First, I did give this a 7 in competition because it was funny and cute. The expression on the cats face is priceless. What could have made this truly excellent? The diagonal lighting is great, but the background is cluttered. The top part could have faded to black without any problem. Cats being what they are, I bet you could have moved that newspaper out of the way, and found a better 'throne' for the cat to recline on. Finally, the area to the right of the cat's elbow doesn't tell much story. If it was mine, I'd crop at the elbow. |

I think it might be "stronger" if cropped (mostly) from the right to a square containing just the faces. Ironically, I also think it would look more finished if you used some tape or something to remove the cat hair from Speckles' little buddy ...
