I confess: I had an embarrassment of riches from which to choose. So it was very, very difficult to choose. I really wanted to enter something from one of the Utah parks, but silly me managed to delete them all somehow. I've since rescued them, but the process altered them, so they would not be valid originals for validation (should I be so lucky :)
This is from a trip this year with my dear pal Susan Ottalini. It was her birthday trip, and we had a splendid time. This experience on the Racetrack was rather magical. It is not your "typical" park image, but together with the halo sun (late afternoon, not midnight :), and the quiet expanse with these mysterious sailing rocks, well, it was the epitome park experience for me.
Happy birthday, NPS! Thank you for providing so many people with such a spectacular back yard.
I am beyond stoked that this did so well. The Racetrack is an otherworldly location. The ground is almost living: it is warm, and looks like skin, if you were to vastly amplify skin. It is like a living thing. We were exceedingly fortunate to also have a sun halo materialize for about 30 minutes while we were there. And of course, the sailing stones. Here is an explanation of how they happen. |

Granted, it is a stunning setting, but you have captured it spectacularly in all of its drama and mystery. Very nicely done. |

Wish that horizon was straight! Yea, you know who you are.
Kidding aside, I want to come to this place to photograph this phenomenon. I think your version is very special and the halo sun adds another mysterious feel to it. Congratulations!
I missed entering this challenge, darn it. |

Somebody should call the Sierra Club, alert them to all the wonderful photos in this challenge. It's truly amazing. What a beautiful planet we have to live on. Thanks for posting this shot. |
