Critique Club critique by Tim Jensen
This is a very solid portrait. Strangely though, it took me a few moments to fully appreciate it. Maybe I just fell for this guy's cute face but more likely it is the strong photographic elements that drew me in.
You mentioned about wanting to remove or lessen some of the shadows but I disagree. I like it the way it is because the strong shadows help to create a dramatic effect that compliments the contrast in the hair color. Too much eveness in the lighting could create an unnaturalness to the photo.
I particularily like the tight cropping. It is very effective in emphasizing the dog's features and showing maximum detail.
The depth of field is very good. You put the maximum focus on the eyes where it should be and allowed the details in the nose and ears to be a little soft. This is a nice way to show detail while still showing some depth and 3dimensionality.
You selected a good composition and I think it works very well that Jaz is looking away like he is daydreaming or focused on something behind you. That adds to the interst and wonderment of the photo. Too many people think that all subjects in a portrait are supposed to be looking and smiling straight at the camera. Wrong.
The photo clearly meets the challenge and it was obviously executed very well with clean lines and detail and very natural looking colors. It may have more of a sentimental factor rather then a wow factor but I feel that this is an interesting, well composed photo. Nice job.

Great expressive shot!!! And I'm not a dog person!! Thank you for taking off the dog's collar - attention to detail counts. Great lighting - wonderful composition. |

Very nice lighting. I would liked to have seen a different crop: less of the dogs chest and more of his ears. =-) 7 |

Whatever you're doing, he's taking it all in very seriously. Beautiful colors, so clear and vibrant. Cropped a little tightly for me personally, but nice photo. You'll see this in most of my pet comments. It's a personal thing. Still a beautiful photo. Well done. |

Let's see... Exposure = great, Focus = super clear, Framing = wonderful, Border = fine, Facial expression of dog = perfect. I hope this picture is already hanging on a wall somewhere because it certainly deserves to be. Awesome shot with nothing wrong at all - 10. |
