A Great Egret (Ardea Alba) relaxing in the early morning fog on the San Jacinto river as I watch from my Ascend H12 kayak, Texas, USA.

This is my first entry with my new lens and I am really surprised there have not been any entries with it...........so it's a first for the site also. I did use the 1.4x TC for this shot, so it is shot at 420mm or 850mm effective handheld from my kayak.

When I found this Great Egret sitting there before sunrise I got into position and began waiting. I am glad I took this shot when I did because I was waiting for the sun to peak over the trees, which would have made for an amazing shot............but, he flew off before the sun had a chance to get above the trees.

But I feel this photo in the more subdued lighting fits the challenge much better. I am hoping for a 6+ on this one.

as has been pointed out, this is the same bird from my photograph that got the red ribbon in the Waterscape challenge. that photo was taken with my 150mm f2.0 lens and this one with my 300mm f4.0 lens + 1.4x TC. This photograph is taken with 840mm of effective reach and the other with 300mm of effective reach and approximently 6 minutes apart.

Hello from the critique club

An appealing image that meets the challenge well

Woah Ronnie, that egret done you plenty good again, congratulations. What a great entry, the long patient wait for both of you reflects a quiet atmosphere to its fullest. I have to agree this subdued image would seem to me to be far more fitting than the potential sunny image would have been. You must be well pleased with this but even more excited at the potential imagery you and your new lens have to look forward to…!

Thanks for the votes and comments, they are appreciated.

I will have to say that I was surprised when I got up this morning. With the score I had, I was sure I would end up in 4th-7th......................

But it sure is a great way to kick of the first challenge with my new lens.

This image is suffused with calm, at least until the bird strikes. The lovely background greatly contributes to the quiet atmosphere. Nice.
