Initial thoughts
Great eye contact and wonderful textures and colours.
Composition/ Content
I really like the angles of the lines of coloured scales, the snake̢۪s mouth and the lower coil of his body within the frame. I like that we are slightly sideways on to his face but not overly so.
Colour-wise I love the limited brown, beige, cream and orangey colour palette.
I am in two minds about the DOF choice – I love that the background is out of focus while the eye is so wonderfully sharp but I am not sure about the nose/ tip of his face being out of focus.
In terms of focal point my eye is torn between the clearly focussed eye and the fuzzy area that is the nose.
I guess the only way to know for sure would be to see both choices – did you happen to take it with more DOF too by any chance?
Background
Perfectly out of focus and the orangey colour is just right.
Camera Work - Technical
Wondefully sharp. Very well captured.
Digital Processing - Technical
Great crop (if this isn̢۪t the shot straight out of the camera) and no artifacts visible (on my monitor anyway).
Fits The Challenge
Definitely.
My Opinion On The Photo
Compelling.
Questions
Did you take it through glass? It doesn̢۪t seem so.

Exemplary use of a tight DOF. Might have been nice to widen it just a touch to get that nose in focus, too. But still a great shot. |

use the largest fstop # possible to get a deeper field of focus.. that way his whole face is focused.. if you did do that, backing up a little might help.. great lighting though... thats always tough for me on macros |

Scary. I really like the way you used DOF to bring the focus to the eyes alone. Technically a perfect photo. |

Would have loved this shot with more DOF. I like where the depth of field fades behind his head, but this would have been a powerful image if it were sharp all the way to the front of his head. Still pretty amazing, though! |

The Depth of Field here seems a bit shallow - the nose (?) of the snake is out of focus, and it doesn't look like it should be. I like the rest of the photo, especially the level of clarity of the snake's scales. |

Very scary! Good shot! Color seems very good. Focus is a narrow DOF, which works, but I would have preferred from the tip of his nose to eyes, rather than from the eyes back. In focus parts are very detailed. I really like the reflections in it's eye. Challenge met. 7 Swash |

Is he/she your pet? Pefect focus on the eye but I'd rather see the enter head (eye and nose) in focus. |

excellent macro! would like to see the tip of his nose in focus too, but the short dof beyond the eye is good. if the nose was in focus, I'd be jumping away from my monitor!!.. as it is.. I am skittish. |

I would have liked to see the snake's nose(?) a little more in focus. Wider DOF would have helped, but narrow DOF is nice for the rest of the body. |

Couldn't you at least get him to smile?!? Would be fantastic for a texture challenge. I wish the DOF was just a bit wider, especially on his nose. |

In my opinion if the tip of the nose would have been in focus you would get a lot of tens. |

I love snakes. My recommendation: more focus on the nose. This might work if only one eye was showing and you wanted to lead the viewer to the eye. I still like the shallow depth of field in the back. Good luck. Jacko. |

Wow! it really does seem to be coming out of the screen! 3D effects for free. Excellent - love the focus on the eyes and leaving the snout out of focus. Simply great. |

The tip of the face looks a little out of focus. Perhaps a little wider depth of focus would have served well? |
