Wow! Black and white minimal is so difficult (at least in my mind). You nailed it!! |

I'd like to see the histogram on this image! From total black to blown out whites. In this case, both are appropriate and necessary. The portions of the light that lack detail, shouldn't have any - like staring into the sun. This works well in composition and as an exploration of grayscale tonal range. Keep the theme! |

Thanks. I'll bear that in mind, but I hope I don't have to. |

Great idea to challenge yourself with minimal, never easy but the best way to improve.
Like two alien ships, nicely composed and balanced shot. |

Like flowers moving with the sun, glorious in their brightness. Very striking. |

i totally agree about it being challenging using minimal black and white ...
i dont know how much you can adjust things in the picture style in camera ..
for the 'c __ is for' challenge ... i took a photo of an insect and changed the picture style in camera .. i will have to look to see if i can make more dramatic changes .. as that is something i was interested in ..
check out this image of insteps .. minimal editing rules ..
it may also depend on your camera .. as to what you can do ..

Thanks GeneralE. I think I'll have to print that when I'm at my computer. The built in white balance settings weren't much help with the test shots I tried but I haven't had time to try custom settings yet. |

You've set yourself quite a challenge!
I'm not familiar with "colour filter settings" for your camera, but if you are trying to accentuate, suppress, or shift colors you might try setting your custom White Balance to a colour target, which produces an effect similar to using a physical filter of the opposite of whatever colour you use to set the WB. I keep a 4x6 print like this in my camera bag:

Thanks. I don't think I gave enough thought to my choice of project. I chose minimal to make it easier to submit from my phone when I don't have time to download and edit my photos on the computer. But having committed to minimal, I'm hoping it will be a good learning experience. |
