Back alleys, where pretension is dropped and where a relaxed attitude reigns, afford the explorer fresh terrain. I'm grateful for unmanicured vistas.

Those are very difficult to find in Switzerland, everything is so tidy here! (but, to be honest, I love it that way :)

Interesting collection of rather unrelated things.

PS I don't quite agree. Poverty does not have to mean letting things go into ruin. You don't need to have money to do some tidying up. I think there is a cultural element there, I have seen a lot of this in the northern part of Australia, new government housing going into ruins within months (!)

My husband comes from Yorkshire, UK. His family comes from a poor background, they used to live in council housing, did simple menial jobs. But they were all very house pride, clean and tidy regardless of their poverty. One good story is about a council house scheduled for demolition, the family was moved to another council accommodation but they still left the old house about to be demolished spotlessly clean! Even washed the windows. That was just so very strong in their traditions that they could not leave it otherwise. I liked this story very much.

Thanks, Mariuca.
And I certainly agree with your comment that, in effect, unmanicured areas are especially treasured in places where so much is manicured, like urban areas. But where neglect and poverty are all too prevalent it's a gratuitous luxury. There, and hereabouts as well, very much improvement is necessary in order to enable people to have healthy, secure and financially stable lives. It's easy to be quaint when your back isn't against the wall.
Yes, that's ailanthus, tree of heaven.

Beautiful find from a trained eye to spot it. The timid green (ailanthus?) brings a bit of hope to an old private parking.

I half way agree with your statement though. We can afford to love the unmanicured spaces here and in other thriving spaces but there are plenty of neglected parts in this world, very photogenic but in dire need of maintenance and better living conditions.

Such places have their own charms.

Somewhat like urban exploring or exploring abandoned places. It definitely affords you a unique and fresh terrain. This could also apply to Avant-Garde.

Agreed. There are miracles of form and textures in the most unlikely, unmanicured places. Not to mention the foundation and remnants of amazing stories.
