Our first sunny afternoon in several days. Robert ( Bear_music) came and sat across from where I was sitting. The light through the skylight caught the lowest part of his beard. My camera was within reach. I asked him to move his head forward a few inches and took 2 or 3 shots with no further preparation.... I mention this as it reminds me that the reason I often find my photos of people unsatisfactory is because something is lost while I am "setting them up".

I felt this off-centered crop worked better with the lighting.

Just to clarify in light of Lynn's PennyStreet's comment. The title had multiple meanings for me.

While Robert does have several serious health issues, I'm glad to say that we are not yet "counting the days" in terms of their impact.

He is however, "counting the days" to leaving the house once again. His severe emphysema/COPD puts him in a very high risk category for covid-19.

We're also "counting the days" he will go before trimming his beard. I think it looks particularly handsome in this image, but in another couple of months ...

Thank you for the comments and votes.

I like that you didn't make the eye in the dark completely dark. You left the sparkle.
I zoomed in and saw and was pleasantly surprised.
Nice detail.
In this world of redundant photography it is needful.
And in my opinion, necessary.
Otherwise, we'll all slide too much into the technical, and not recover easily!

Great capture and great story. This image has that indescribable feel to it, at least for me.

This was a rare 10 from me. It's really stunning and I should have said so earlier. My best to you both!

A lot to like about your portrait. The title says it all and defines the purpose. The lighting is well executed and creates the mood. A little out of focus on the forehead which draws my eye to the lower part of your face and beard, but then that very tiny light in the eye adds the mystery! One of my favorites in the challenge.
