CRITIQUE CLUB

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.

LIGHTING: Superb, absolutely PERFECT. I am sure people would love to know how this lighting was set up. Maybe a tutorial?

CHALLENGE: Very yellow, and all the attention is on the yellow as well. Gorgeous.

TECHNICAL: Obviously perfect

CHANGES: I can't think of a single one to be honest. This honestly looks like a print you would buy. You did a fabulous job and your ribbon was well-deserved. - I strongly think you should do a lighting tutorial. Lighting like this is NOT easy!

Hey! Cool. I didn't expect to place, but I won't complain. Low scoring challenges can be nice ;)
I've seen a lot of really nice flower shots on photosig, and then magnetic's cliche shot inspired me to try one myself. The shot has actually been rotated 90 degrees cc, so the light was to my right instead of above. I used a small halogen work light from home depot with a homemade diffuser in front (frame covered with white cloth from walmart).
I adjusted levels some in photoshop - especially the black - until I got what I wanted, and sharpened just a bit. I had an alternate version with more light on the stem, but I prefer this one. I think it's more dramatic to have the stem disappearing into the black. However, I didn't take into account that some people don't have their monitors calibrated correctly and wouldn't be able to see it at all. Live and learn. Thanks for the comments!

Congratulations! The leaf improves your composition. Lighting is great. Can you elaborate on how you lighted the picture?

Yay Indi!!! One of only 2 exceptions to my self-imposed "every flower photo in this challenge gets a 4" rule.

Beautifully done!

The lighting on this photo is impeccable, I feel. There is a good, simple elegance to the lines and to the balance. Add a sense of mystery to it with the deep shadows, and this is a solid photo. Thanks for sharing.

A simply stunning photograph. The subtle hint of light from the top of the flower is awesome. I like how you managed to eliminate part of the stem and only highlight the stem on the bottom of the image. Colour, composition and framing is very well done indeed. Excellent job and GL.

Very beautiful. The red at the bottom of the tulip looks almost like curling flames. Good lighting.

cliche' perfection! with lighting and contrast and DoF like this, you should score really well... the subject presentation however is only standard... if you can over come having a standard presentation of subject for such a superior shot, you might do really really well in the challenge... depends on the voters moods I guess.. good luck!

It it hadn't been for the extra light on the top of the tulip it would be considered an orange tulip. Personally don't like how the plant disappears in the center of the photo then re-appears at the bottom left corner. No continunity to the photo, no flow. And a big was of a lot of space. Think I know the effect you were looking for but didn't quite get it, but then maybe you got exactly what you wanted and it just doesn't appeal to me personally.

Excellent shot... the yellow is very strong here... I think the stem of the flower needs just a touch more light... still a 10.. great shot :) - setzler
