Thank you all for voting this to a blue ribbon.

This was nr 742 after switching to digital in 2002 and I am still proud of the image. It only took a few seconds to make: walk up to the nest box where these birds were nesting next to our house (and getting louder by the day) and flash a few images at close range at the right moment.

The birds fledged the next day ...... and were eaten by the waiting magpie family.

Nature is cute. But cruel.

Awful news about the babies. Do magpies do that a lot?

Yes, they do. Magpies are very smart, they often work together as a group and they eat anything they can get their hands on, young birds, mice, frogs, etc. They even came into our house (just a few feet) to steal cat food. One bird entered, while the others stood on the lookout. They also love to harass other animals (for example our rabbit) as a group, like local mobsters. Very funny to see.

An amazingly delightful capture, Willem and many, many congrats on the Blue. Mind you, I could have done without the bad news at the end.

This belongs on a Hallmark card! :-) So many captions you could put with it.

What a capture! I would love to see something like this in person. Nit: feathers on top of the head look oversharpened to me.
