Thanks everyone for your comments and votes. I see a lot of people felt I should have rotated this photo. Rotating it would not have made it the photo I laid on the cold wet ground to get. : ) It is not a photo of a pillar from the ground up. It is what the title says. I loved the "math" in this photo and felt it was very much like something Escher would have drawn.. For those that felt the lines were distracting or made you dizzy - they were suppose to. : )

The mathematics of this photograph absolutely ROCK! I love it!

I think you should have rotated this image before you submitted it ......
05/05/2002 01:27:00 PM
I like the choice of angle - makes it seem escher-like at first glance! The light feels a bit gloomy though
05/04/2002 10:08:00 PM
where the heck is that, it's cool
05/04/2002 08:50:00 PM
Nice angle! Great shot
05/03/2002 06:37:00 PM
Weird and crooked... but cool angle... not so sure its looking up.
05/03/2002 10:17:00 AM
Odd angle seems a little distracting to me.
05/02/2002 05:47:00 PM
This is an interesting shot. Did you forget to turn it 90 CW, or did you intend for us to figure what was up and down? Good idea, and nice shot.
05/02/2002 02:12:00 PM
Interesting title and perspective.
05/02/2002 11:37:00 AM
Very good photo. Personally I would have rotated the picture 90 degrees clockwise.
05/02/2002 07:56:00 AM
weird angle. Doesn't really work for me though
05/01/2002 05:22:00 PM
Which way is up? It looks like the picture should be rotated right.
05/01/2002 11:22:00 AM
Should this one be a portrait? The angle makes me dizzy. Good shot! One of my top 10!

Took me a minute to realize that this picture is turned sideways than how most would normally orient it. Nice use of lines. I think you might want to see how it looks in black and white...just because there isn't much color and taking out that hint of green might put the emphasis more on the lines.

rotate 90° clockwise
04/30/2002 03:32:00 PM
I assume this is a vertical pillar so why have you show it on its side?
04/30/2002 03:08:00 PM
The angle seems a little awkward maybe if this shot was rotated by 90 clockwise?
04/30/2002 11:44:00 AM
wow -- does some interesting things to leave it as a horizontal like that -- looks like you had a little bit of a problem shooting in a darkishh space on a bright day? I'd like to see the midtones and shadows in this lightened up a little and the highlights toned down. (Hope that's not too Photoshop geek...)
04/30/2002 09:37:00 AM
Yes, its up.However I find all the lines in different directions distracting
04/29/2002 09:35:00 PM
If only this pic was rotated 90 degrees.... Ya coulda been a contender!
04/29/2002 09:19:00 PM
Good contrasting angles. The trees in the back are too distracting though.
04/29/2002 07:19:00 PM
The angle does not justice to the pillar. If you rotated 90 CW, it might.
04/29/2002 05:50:00 PM
looks uupside down
04/29/2002 01:54:00 PM
is this picture sideways?
04/29/2002 01:49:00 PM
I can see why people might say they get dizzy looking at this picture. It's an odd angle - this takes away the sense of up and down. It definitely suggest UP, but a falling out of a parachute up, if that makes sense. I might have tried to get better lighting for this picture, if that was at all possible, and I might have tried to get the main beam (and the secondary, smaller ones) in better focus, either with manual focus or macro, to see if you could capture more of the nice texture from the picture. I wish you could have brought out the foliage more, and maybe dulled the bleached out section in the lower left hand corner of the picture, maybe cropped the lower-right hand some to bring more attention to the main beam, and somehow brought out the nice colors, too. That's a lot to ask, and I have no idea how I would even hope to accomplish it. This is a very good picture overall, and a very challenging one at that. You deserve a good score for this one.

i like the angles in this photo
04/29/2002 09:05:00 AM
interesting picture, good job with the challenge
04/29/2002 08:54:00 AM
all these lines, messes with my head.
04/29/2002 07:37:00 AM
This angle is rather confusing to the eye.
04/29/2002 07:17:00 AM
This is an interesting photograph but I think it would do a much better job of relaying the challenge topic if it was rotated 90 degrees clockwise to give some sense of looking up.
04/29/2002 07:13:00 AM
Interesting shot. I must say that right now I hate anything cartesian.....I have an exam that includes that stuff in 3 hours = P Nice picture though
04/29/2002 06:16:00 AM
A bit confusing.
04/29/2002 12:09:00 AM
very dizzing would of liked better if you put up so I didn't have to tilt my head.
