CRITIQUE CLUB

Challenge: I think this met the challenge great from your perspective. Unfortuneately, there are alot of people who did not fully understand what the objects were, so they were a little confused. Maybe including a little more of the cross would have helped.

Technique: The colors here are gorgeous and I personally like the cropping with the white space. It's a creative approach, and obviously well-thought out. There may be just a little TOO much white space to the right.

Overall: A sensitive subject that was sure to get mixed reviews. It also has alot to do with the way people view the death of Christ - some would feel despair, some gratitude, some indifference. Being a Christian myself, I appreciate you going out there and trying this.

Gets an 8 for image quality and interest, gets an 11 for the message!

Okay, this is the 10th time I've visited this image and I finally got it. ANd I like the idea, too. If you had used nails or spikes other than railroad spikes, it might be clearer. And a bit higher perspective would accentuate the image of the cross, though I do like a lowish angle. Keep tweeking and it will come.

This is really stretching a title to make something fit. Looks like railroad spikes to me. Sorry, try again next week.

Focus seems very sharp, cropping - cutting off part of the subject is probably not a good thing, esp. with all the open space at the other end. Being a non-christian person, this image does not offer me any dispair type feelings, but I would think this more lends itself to hope than dispair. 4 Swash

Awesome! Message and picture. I think compositionally, it may have been a little stronger if the entire bottom nail was in the frame, OR if it was diagonal through the frame. Great work though.

I really like this alot and I appreciate you stepping out and touching on this subject in so thoughtful a way...other's tried and failed, unfortunately, to capture this emotion. You hit the nail right on the head, figuratively and literally! Awesome...I hope that people "get" it!

Is that a "War Hammer"? Pretty good.. I don't like these really long and skinny images however. You should have put a small puddle of blood below the hammer and turned the hammer around so the blunt end is toward the camera.

This is a well composed photo and the unusual cropping actually enhances it in my opinion. I had to think about it for a while to get the relevance to the "despair" challenge, but I got it in the end from your title, the nails and the cross image. Good luck on this one and I hope everyone else will understand it.

Excellent shot, I wish you hadn't cropped off the spike on the left side though.

I think i'd like to see the end of the nail to the left. Otherwise, I like the cropping/framing/ the negative space to the right is good, and I like the closeness of the vertical crop. the focus and clarity are good. color and lighting appear to be ok as well. i guess my only minor complaint is the crop to the left. overall a nice shot. good luck in the challenge.

I don't understand this - is it religious? If so, a cross would have helped with the meaning.

Interestingly conceived and done. I must admit that I would prefer to have all of the horizontal spike showing, and IMHO the cross-lying top spikeshould be in focus at the sharp end rather than the head. An extremely good concept on the 'despair' theme, though!

Too much cropping on the left. Seeing the whole nail would have been more effective
