It was taken using Olympus' proprietary "LiveComp" mode that allows to take arbitrarily long exposures easily, without danger of overexposing the background. I opened the shutter and lighted the snail with a low-intensity ambient light for about 200 sec while it was busy crawling across a blue cardboard, and finished it with a small flash. We made about 20 of those attempts, so the poor snail was exhausted and eventually stopped moving and fell asleep. I was exhausted too, so we called it a day, and I let her go back into the wild.

Here is another version with slightly different settings and lighting

It's is probably more interesting and bizarre, but I chose the first one since I thought it better communicated the sense of motion.

absolutely amazing ..
and thankyou for detailing how you achieved this image ..
after reading your notes i'm still in the dark to be honest .. !! ..
which of course has nothing to do with your explanation but everything to do with my ability to understand ..
anyway .. enough about my deficiencies .. ;)
when i first saw this i was blown away .. its an extremely attractive image .. no doubt ..
the colours i find particularly appealing ..
but its also technically excellent ..
both of which seem to be trade marks of your photography ... no matter what genre ..
many congratulations on the blue .. totally fitting considering your colour palette .. :)
